The 50×70 flip pillow is the default on either bed if you do not sleep hot — leave it on sale, and you are not buying cooling you skipped in the mattress.
We slept on these two. Emma has since refreshed both names.
Each review already flags it: Emma now also sells a newer Original and a newer Pro under the same names, mainly with stronger edges. This comparison is the pair we actually spent eight weeks on. We have not slept on the refreshed SKUs yet — we will update when we have. Outlet listings (Original+ / Pro outlet) are usually the versions in our reviews, and they are typically cheaper.
The short verdict
Seán's line on the Pro review still holds: if someone asks "just tell me which Emma to buy," the Original Pro is the default. It is the Goldilocks bed in the range we have scored — not as soft as the Elite / Airgrid, not as thin as the Lite. The Original is still the smarter buy when the sleeper profile matches and the extra ThermoSync layer would be wasted money.
Choose the Original Pro if…
- You sleep warm, or one of you does — cooling is 4.8 vs 3.5.
- You want the extra-tall 18.5 cm, 7-zone springs. Ciarán (85 kg, back) called it the best Emma he tested for lumbar fill.
- You sit around 75–110 kg and need the more structured hybrid. The Original review itself points heavier sleepers here.
- You will use the bed every night and can buy it on sale (€550–€750 Double, €650–€850 King in our 2026 notes).
Choose the Original if…
- You are a side or combo sleeper between 60 and 90 kg. That is Aoife and Siobhán's sweet spot.
- You sleep at a neutral temperature. Airgocell helps; it does not replace ThermoSync.
- Value is the constraint. Value score 4.6 vs 4.2; a sale King is typically €559–€594 vs €650–€850.
- You want the 5-layer hybrid we actually slept on (now often listed as Original+ in outlet).

Honest trade-offs
Cooling
Winner: Original Pro (4.8 vs 3.5).
On the Original, MemoryAdapt traps heat. Oisín noticed warmth after 3–4 hours, especially at hips and shoulders. Airgocell helps airflow; it does not cancel the memory-foam hotspot. The Original review tells hot sleepers to look at Elite or Simba, not to "upgrade the cover and hope."
On the Pro, the 20 mm graphite ThermoSync layer is the point of the mattress. It regulates rather than icing you: Ciarán (who runs warm) slept through without a fan; Aoife (who runs cold) did not shiver on Irish autumn and winter nights. If you want a colder first touch than ThermoSync, that is still the Elite / Airgrid, not the Original.
Edge support
Winner: Original Pro (4.0 vs 3.0) — still not a strength.
The Original's sit-edge sinkage was 4.5 inches against a 3.95-inch industry average; Siobhán said couples drift toward the middle. The Pro's sit test is 4.0/10 — "a bit unstable" when dressing, fine for sleeping near the edge (4.5/10 lying). Emma's newer same-name SKUs claim stronger edges. We have not sat-tested those yet.
Durability and weight
Pro looks the more structured long-term bet. We do not have matching 6-month data on both.
Original after 6 months: 0.6 cm height loss, 0.8 cm body impressions — acceptable on our unit — but buyer reviews flag a sagging pattern for 90 kg+ between 6 and 24 months. Realistic lifespan cited on that review: 5–8 years for average-weight sleepers, with rotation every 3 months.
Pro after 3 months: 26.0 cm (0.2 cm down from the 26.2 cm break-in height), 0.3 cm impression, ThermoSync unchanged. We have not published the 6- or 12-month Pro re-measure yet. King weight is 34.2 kg on the Pro vs about 33 kg on the Original — both are two-person stairs jobs, and Ireland delivery is doorstep-only on the Pro.
Value
Winner: Original (4.6 vs 4.2), if the sleeper profile fits.
Never pay Emma RRP on either. Original Single sale around €391 (RRP €559). Pro Single sale €380–€530 (RRP €959) — the Pro discount looks dramatic because the ticket RRP is higher. On a Double, you are usually paying a couple of hundred extra for ThermoSync and the taller 7-zone unit. That extra is worth it for heat and support. It is optional for a cool-sleeping 70 kg side sleeper.
What the testers actually said

Aoife — 65 kg, side, runs cold
Either can workOriginal: "The foam wraps around my shoulder and hip exactly where it needs to." Shoulder map 8.8/10. Excellent match at her weight.
Pro: Hip pressure in week one, gone by week three. Shoulder also 8.8/10. "Not quite as cradling as the Airgrid… for most side sleepers, that's the better trade-off."
Ciarán — 85 kg, back, lumbar sensitivity
ProOriginal: Impressed for a month, then foam softening and hips a fraction lower by week 6. "Not as good as on the firmer Original Lite."
Pro: "The best Emma mattress I've tested for back support." Lumbar pressure 8.5/10 vs 7.8 on the Original. Extra-tall springs are the difference he can feel.
Siobhán — 70 kg, combination, light sleeper
Tie on motionOriginal: Partner movement was "a faint ripple instead of the full earthquake." Edge insecurity pushed them toward the middle.
Pro: Position changes without feeling stuck; "my partner says he barely notices when I move now." Motion isolation 4.5 on both reviews.
Oisín — 95 kg, stomach, runs hot
Neither is his bedOriginal: Pelvis 5.0/10. "Any stomach sleeper over 80 kg should be looking at the Original Lite or something firmer." Heat after 3–4 hours.
Pro: Pelvis 6.5/10 — better, still "borderline." He would take a firmer mattress. Dedicated heavy stomach sleepers are not the Pro's win condition either.

Double spring counts are not identical (Original 645, Pro 600). We are not going to pretend that is a quality ranking on its own — zone count and coil height are the differences testers felt.

Bottom line
The Original Pro is the better mattress we tested — higher overall score, real cooling, better support and a less-bad edge. The Original is the better purchase when you fit its 60–90 kg side/combo profile and do not sleep hot. That is the whole decision. The rest of the Emma range (Lite, Elite, Performance first looks) is for different jobs.
