Why Pay the Emma Brand Tax on a Metal Rectangle?
Most metal beds sold in Ireland are a commodity: steel tubes, wooden slats, a hex key, a weekend. IKEA will sell you that idea for a little over a hundred euro. Emma will sell you a black version of the same idea for €419–€509 and put a 30-night trial on it. The review is not “does steel hold a mattress.” It is whether the brand premium is the product you are actually buying.
What the extra euro actually buys, if you are charitable: a van to the door instead of a Ballymun click-and-collect, spare parts through a support form, sizes that line up with an Emma mattress already on the same invoice, and a black finish that does not look like a student special in a badly lit listing photo. What it does not buy: exotic alloy, a thicker gauge we could measure from the published copy (Emma does not print one), or a headboard.
Buy this because you need a Single (the upholstered Original Bed refuses to offer one), or you want a low metal look, or you want one checkout with an Emma mattress. Do not buy it because the word Emma appeared and you assumed that meant cheaper than the Original Bed. On the Single, versus a supermarket frame, it can be the other way around.

Fine frame. I would buy it for a spare Single. I would not buy it to make a main bedroom look expensive. That is the whole note, and the rest of the page is me refusing to dress it up as a design story. It is black metal. It is 25 cm off the floor. The slats did not squeak after a week in the spare room. Oisín at 95 kg produced no drama. Storage under it is genuine if your boxes are not taller than the unpublished rail gap.
The uncomfortable part is the till. I still looked at IKEA’s metal frames and winced at Emma’s Double price. Loyalty to a mattress brand is not a reason to overpay for a rectangle. If you are already ordering an Original or a Pro and you want the van to bring a Single for the box room in the same drop, this SKU exists for that logistics problem. That is a real Irish use case — granny flat, first apartment, WFH spare room — and it is the only honest one at €419.
We searched for independent Irish owner write-ups of this exact bed. The corpus is approximately none. No invented “my cousin in Galway” paragraph. Quick Verdict for Irish Buyers
The Metal Bed is a black metal rectangle with wooden slats. Height 25 cm — Emma’s copy is explicit that this leaves under-bed storage. You put the mattress straight on the slats. No headboard, no fabric, no beige/grey choice. Sizes: Single 90×190 (23 kg), Double 135×190 (31 kg), King 150×200 (32 kg), Super King 180×200 (40 kg). Delivery 2–5 working days. Single: one package. Support is what a decent slatted frame should be: even, ventilated, 250 kg continuous load — same figure as the Original Bed. Cleaning is a damp cloth. The exotic bit is paying Emma’s brand price for it, and skipping the Late Summer sale that the mattress range was wearing.
Bottom line: the Emma bed you buy for a Single room, a guest room, or a minimal look. Compare high-street metal frames on price before you checkout out of loyalty.

Schema May Say Headboard. The Bed Does Not Have One.
This is the product-page mismatch we need in writing. Emma’s HTML photography and the live configurator show a black metal frame with slats and nothing behind the pillows. There is no headboard option to click, unlike the Original Bed’s Plain board. Separately, the JSON-LD (and some auto-generated feature lists) on emma-sleep.ie have been known to include the word headboard. That is structured-data drift, not a part in the carton.

Practically: if you sit up with a laptop, you need a wall, a pillow fortress, or a separate headboard from another shop. Siobhán’s guest-room take was exactly that — “we used the wall.” Do not order this SKU expecting the Original Bed’s height-adjustable padded board to appear at checkout as a €0 default.
The stack is three parts, not seven
There is no upholstery stack to decode. Finish is black metal. Emma’s three-part explainer is actually useful: support, ventilation, mattress life.
Black metal frame
The structure. Wipe clean. Emma’s product copy puts overall height at 25 cm. It is not wrought-iron jewellery and it is not a folding 1990s guest horror. 250 kg continuous load — same published figure as the upholstered Original Bed.
Wooden slats
Move with weight, spread load, keep air under the mattress. Mattress goes directly on top. Emma’s three-slide argument (support, ventilation, mattress life) is the correct argument for a slatted base. Slat-gap millimetres are unpublished — we are not guessing.
No headboard
A design choice, not a missing accessory in the box. Photos and the configurator have none. If Emma’s schema.org blob still utters the word “headboard,” trust the pictures. Budget a wall, a pillow stack, or a separate board.
Size run
Single 23 kg in one box. Double 31 kg, King 32 kg, Super King 40 kg, larger sizes in two packages of 16–23 kg each, per Emma’s FAQ. This is the only Emma bed that exists in Single.
25 cm Total: Storage Yes, Easy Stand-Up Maybe Not
Emma publishes 25 cm overall height and uses under-bed storage as a selling point. That is directionally true: a low metal rail leaves a cavity for suitcases, vacuum, and the plastic boxes every Irish spare room accumulates. What they do not publish is the clearance under the rail in millimetres — the number that decides whether your 22 cm box actually slides in or hits a stretcher. We are not inventing that gap.
Aoife’s tester note is the other half of 25 cm: getting up from that height is more of a dip than the Original platform. Younger knees, fine. Not a seniors bed. If you are buying it for a parent with stiff knees, the height is a deal-breaker — do not use the 30 nights to discover that. Measure how they get out of their current bed first.
IKEA Maths (and Why Argos Is Not in the Table)
Argos left the Republic in 2023. It is not a live ROI price check, however many UK tabs still autocompleted in your search. The honest floor in Ireland is IKEA Ballymun / Cork / and the rest of the network, plus whoever is selling a no-name metal frame on the high street this month.

Emma Double at €459 is roughly four times VEVELSTAD. STJÄRNÖ undercuts Emma and includes a headboard. The 30-night trial, spare-parts path, and doorstep delivery are the Emma extras. If those extras are worth ~€340 on a Double to you, checkout. If they are not, IKEA is not a moral failing — it is the commodity price of a metal slatted base in this country.

The Case Against the Metal Bed
We give it 3.8/5. The missing star is mostly price and the missing board, not a slat that failed.
1. €419–€509 is not a bargain metal frame
IKEA VEVELSTAD Double is €115 with slats. Emma Double is €459. You are paying for trial and delivery, not exotic steel. If the cheapest competent frame in Ireland is the brief, this SKU is a miss. Value for money is our lowest sub-score (3.3) for a reason.
2. No headboard, low 25 cm profile
Sit-up reading and guest laptops need a wall. Sit-to-stand from 25 cm is a dip. Storage is real; easy standing for stiff hips is not. Schema saying “headboard” does not put one in the van.
3. Two-year warranty, no Small Double, looks like a metal bed
Same 2-year furniture guarantee as the Original Bed — not 10. Live IE page is Single, Double, King, Super King only; 120×190 is missing. If you wanted upholstery, that is the other Emma frame, and a different budget once the headboard is on.
When to walk away: you need a padded board, a higher platform, the cheapest steel in the State, or a dressed main bedroom. Put the money in the mattress first — Oisín’s line, and the right one.
