Finding a genuinely good mattress on a budget in Ireland has never been easier. The rise of online mattress brands, Irish manufacturers, and competitive retailers means you can now get a quality night's sleep from as little as €150 for a single or €250 for a double. Whether you're furnishing a spare room, setting up a child's bedroom, or simply looking for solid value, there are excellent options that won't leave you tossing and turning — or worrying about your bank balance. We've tested claims, verified Irish availability, and focused on mattresses that deliver real comfort at honest prices. Every option featured ships directly to Irish addresses with clear pricing in euros.

How to Choose a Budget Mattress in Ireland

Spending less doesn't mean accepting poor quality. Check our buying guide for general tips, or see our top-rated mattresses if your budget allows for more options.

The budget-buy truth — a well-chosen cheap mattress sleeps far better than its price tag suggests.

Set a Realistic Budget

In Ireland, you can find genuinely comfortable mattresses from €150-500. The sweet spot for most budget buyers is €200-350, where you'll get decent foam or basic pocket spring construction. Below €150, expect very basic open-coil designs best suited for occasional use. Above €350, you're entering mid-range territory with better durability.

Prioritise Warranty Length

A longer warranty often indicates manufacturer confidence in durability. Look for at least 5 years, though many budget brands now offer 10-year warranties. This matters more with cheaper mattresses since lower-density foams can sag faster. Check what's actually covered — some warranties only cover manufacturing defects, not normal wear.

Check Irish Delivery Costs

Free delivery can significantly impact value. A €200 mattress with €50 delivery costs more than a €230 mattress with free shipping. Most online brands now offer free delivery to Irish addresses, but traditional retailers may charge extra, especially outside Dublin. Always check the total landed cost before comparing prices.

Trial Periods Matter More on a Budget

When spending less, you're taking more risk on comfort. Longer trial periods (30-200 nights) let you properly test a cheaper mattress before committing. Some budget options offer no trial at all — these are riskier purchases. Brands like Emma offer the same 200-night trial on budget and premium mattresses alike.

The Truth About Cheap Mattresses

There's a persistent myth that you need to spend €800+ to get a good mattress. In reality, the mattress industry has historically had enormous markups — often 300-400% above manufacturing costs. The direct-to-consumer model and Irish manufacturers like DFI Beds have disrupted this, offering quality construction at honest prices.

That said, cheaper mattresses do make compromises. You'll typically get lower-density foams (which may soften faster), fewer pocket springs (or open coil instead), and thinner comfort layers. For primary beds used nightly for 7-10 years, spending a bit more often makes sense. For guest rooms, children's beds, or short-term use, budget options deliver excellent value.

The mattresses we've selected below represent the best balance of price, quality, and durability available to Irish buyers. For more information, see our mattress lifespan guide.

      Understanding Budget Mattresses in Ireland

What you need to know about buying a cheap mattress — the trade-offs, the warning signs, and how to get genuine value.

      What Budget Mattresses Typically Sacrifice

Lower-priced mattresses make compromises — understanding these helps you buy smarter. The key areas where cheaper mattresses cut costs are foam density, spring count, and comfort layer thickness. This doesn't mean they're bad, just that they have limitations.

      Lower Foam Density

Budget foams (under 40kg/m³) compress faster over time. Premium mattresses use 50-60kg/m³ foam that maintains shape longer. You may notice sagging after 3-5 years vs 7-10 years with premium options.

      Fewer Springs

Budget pocket spring mattresses typically have 600-1000 springs; premium options have 1500-3000. Fewer springs mean less precise support and more motion transfer between sleepers.

      Thinner Comfort Layers

The top comfort layer (foam or padding) is often 2-4cm on budget mattresses vs 6-10cm on premium. Thinner layers provide less cushioning and may feel firmer. A reversible Emma Original Topper (6 cm, flip soft Airgocell or firmer HRX) is a cheaper way to add a comfort layer than replacing the mattress — see mattress toppers.

      Basic Cover Materials

Premium mattresses use breathable, temperature-regulating fabrics. Budget options typically use standard polyester covers that may sleep hotter.

Warning Signs: When Cheap Is Too Cheap

Not all budget mattresses are created equal. Some red flags indicate a mattress that will disappoint quickly, regardless of price.

      ✗ No Trial Period

If a brand won't let you return it, they likely know it won't satisfy. Legitimate budget brands offer at least 30 nights.

      ✗ Warranty Under 5 Years

Short warranties suggest the manufacturer expects problems. Even budget mattresses from reputable brands offer 10 years.

      ✗ Vague Specifications

If they won't tell you the foam density, spring count, or materials, they're hiding something. Quality brands are transparent.

      ✗ Unrealistic Claims

"Best mattress ever" at €99 is marketing nonsense. Legitimate budget options acknowledge their price-quality trade-offs.

When You Should Actually Spend More

      Budget Makes Sense For:

      • ✓Guest bedrooms used occasionally
      • ✓Children who'll outgrow the mattress
      • ✓Temporary living situations (1-3 years)
      • ✓Secondary homes or holiday properties
      • ✓Rental properties you're furnishing

      Consider Spending More If:

      • !It's your primary bed for daily use
      • !You have chronic back or joint pain
      • !You're a hot sleeper needing cooling
      • !You weigh over 100kg (need denser foams)
      • !You want 10+ years of comfortable use

How to Get the Best Deal in Ireland

Timing and research can stretch your budget significantly further. Here's how Irish shoppers can maximise value.

      Shop Sales Events

Black Friday (November), January sales, and bank holiday weekends see mattress discounts of 30-50%. Emma runs frequent promotions year-round. November tickets live on /black-friday-mattress-deals. This page stays the budget ranking, including January later.

      Consider Irish Manufacturers

DFI Beds and similar Irish makers cut out import costs and middlemen. You often get better quality-per-euro from local producers.

      Check Finance Options

0% finance from DFI, Emma, and others lets you spread costs without interest. A €400 mattress at €80/month may be more accessible than €200 upfront for lesser quality.

      Factor in Delivery Costs

Always calculate total cost including delivery. A €50 delivery fee changes which mattress offers best value. Most online brands offer free delivery.

      Quick Answers

What's the minimum I should spend?

For a primary bed, aim for €200+ for a double. Below this, you're likely getting materials that will degrade quickly. For occasional guest use, €100-150 can work.

Foam or springs on a budget?

Budget pocket springs generally outperform budget foam for durability. Cheap foam compresses faster. Exception: if you need pressure relief for side sleeping, budget memory foam works well.

How long will a cheap mattress last?

Expect 3-5 years of good comfort from a budget mattress vs 7-10 years from mid-range options. Calculate cost-per-year when comparing — sometimes spending more is cheaper long-term.

      Can I negotiate mattress prices?

Online brands have fixed pricing, but physical retailers (Dreams, DFS) may negotiate, especially on ex-display models or when buying with a bed frame.

      • Pricing verified in Euros from Irish-serving websites
      • Trial period and return policies checked for Irish customers
      • Customer reviews from verified Irish purchasers analysed
      • Materials and construction evaluated for durability at price point

A Note on Budget Mattress Buying

We understand that budget constraints are real, and not everyone can spend €800+ on a mattress. Our goal is to help you find the best possible sleep within your means. Every mattress featured here represents genuine value — we've excluded options that are cheap but likely to disappoint.

That said, we encourage using trial periods fully. Budget mattresses involve more uncertainty than premium options, so the ability to return if it doesn't work is crucial. Give any new mattress at least 2-4 weeks before judging — your body needs time to adjust.

If you're on the fence between a budget and mid-range option, consider the cost-per-year. A €400 mattress lasting 8 years costs €50/year; a €200 mattress lasting 4 years costs the same. Sometimes spending slightly more delivers better long-term value.
