The Rebrand: Flip Became Original
Emma retired the honest name. The Flip Mattress Topper is now the Original Topper — same two-face core, same washable cover, same thinner height versus the graphite sibling. The 2026 Original family rename (Lite / Original / Pro / Elite on mattresses; Original / Original Pro on toppers) is a labelling project, not a new foam pour. The flip is still the product. The old name told you that in one syllable.

Bottom line: if you knew the Flip, you know this. Emma changed the word on the box so it sits next to Original mattresses. The two foams did not get the memo.

If you do not know whether you want softer or firmer, this is the topper. If you know you sleep hot, skip the flip and go Pro. Do not buy this as a cooling story. I spent the first half of the week Airgocell-up and the second half HRX-up on the same firm spare mattress we used for the Pro, so the comparison is not imaginary.
Both sides often land mid-firm. That surprised me more than the marketing. You do not get a marshmallow and a plank. You get two neighbouring points on a medium scale, with Airgocell more open and HRX more sprung-back. Siobhán flipped mid-week and it was not a gimmick — she changed her mind without reordering. That is the SKU earning its old name.
I can live on either face. I would not use this to fix summer heat. Oisín was clearer: breathable, not cool. If your only question is “should I try a topper at all,” the sale price and the 100 nights make this the cheaper lesson. If your only question is heat, stop reading and look at the graphite sibling instead.

Quick Verdict for Irish Buyers
The Original Topper is two toppers glued into one: a point-elastic Airgocell foam face that sleeps softer and more open, and an HRX face that sleeps firmer. Airgocell is open-cell polyurethane, not memory foam. Cover is washable on both sides. No anti-slip coating — Emma reserves that for the Pro — so use a strap or a non-slip pad if your sheets drag it. Height is the thin one: 6 cm with cover in the shopping copy, 5 cm in Emma’s model-comparison FAQ.
Who it is for is unusually clear. Side sleepers: Airgocell up. Back and stomach: HRX up. Undecided: buy this instead of guessing at the Pro. Oisín still wanted the Pro’s graphite. Aoife on a firm spare bed was happy on Airgocell and did not miss 3 extra centimetres. Ciarán preferred HRX-up and said the Pro’s extra loft was unnecessary for a back sleeper who already had a sound mattress.
Bottom line: flip to learn your firmness. Spend Pro money only when you already know you want ThermoSync and extra height.

How to Flip It: Core, Not Cover
This is the section people skip, and then they write themselves a confused review. The cover is a bag. The firmness lives in the foam. If you unzip, rotate the ticking, and zip it back with the same face up, you have laundered a cover. You have not changed the bed.
Open-cell PU, point-elastic, the breathability story. Colour cue once unzipped: bluer. Aoife’s spare-room side-sleeper win lived here. Still often mid-firm — not a cloud.
Starting point for shoulders that need a bit of sink on a board-firm mattress.
High-resilience foam, less sink, more push-back. Colour cue: greyer. Ciarán preferred this and did not want Pro height. Oisín’s stomach nights were fine here; his heat nights were not a Flip job.
Starting point if you already sink too far on a giving mattress and only want a thin buffer.
The actual procedure
- Unzip the cover fully. Do not fight it half-on — you will twist the foam and guess which face is up.
- Look at the core. Airgocell reads bluer / more open-pored; HRX reads greyer. Remember it. Take a phone photo if you have to.
- Turn the foam so the face you want is on top. The cover goes back the same way it came off.
- Zip. Put a sticky note on the headboard: “Airgocell this week.” If you lose track, the 100-night trial becomes a coin toss.
Give each face a week, not a nap. First night is height and smell. Firmness opinion starts around night three. Siobhán’s mid-week flip only worked because she had already slept Airgocell long enough to know she wanted the other face — not because she flop-tested both in the shop.
Both sides often land mid-firm. If you expected a 3/10 and a 8/10 in one purchase, this is not that product. It is two neighbouring mediums with different airflow and recovery. That is still enough to change a shoulder night, and not enough to replace a mattress firmness decision you have already made.
Two Foams, One Flip — No Invented Millimetres
Emma’s diagram: washable cover, Airgocell on one face, HRX on the other. Colour cue on the foam helps you remember which side is up once the cover is on — check it when you first unzip so you are not guessing at 11pm. We are not inventing millimetres. Emma has not published them for this SKU. Height is the 6 cm including-cover shopping figure, with the FAQ’s 5 cm of foam called out as leftover comparison copy against the Pro.

Airgocell is not memory foam. Open-cell polyurethane. It recovers faster than visco, it breathes better than closed-cell cheap pads, and it does not conduct heat the way graphite ThermoSync is sold as doing. If another review treats this as a “cooling memory-foam topper,” they have mixed up three materials.
No Anti-Slip — Emma Keeps That for the Pro
Emma’s own comparison FAQ is the source, not a forum rumour: the Original Pro Topper gets an anti-slip underside. This one does not. It is a reversible pad. You cannot coat one face for grip and still flip it as the product. That is a design choice, not a defect they forgot to mention in a footnote.
What happens without it
Sit on the edge to put on socks and the pad can creep. Tug a fitted sheet and you tug the topper. Combination sleepers who turn a lot will notice it more than back sleepers who plant and stay. Siobhán’s restless-partner test was also a stay-put test — the Pro coating would have helped; this cover did not.
What actually works
A thin non-slip under-pad, or straps that go around the mattress. Do not glue it. Do not expect the washable cover to behave like rubber. If stay-put is a must — hospital corners, kids jumping, a slippery hybrid knit — the Pro is the SKU Emma built that coating for.
This is one of the cleaner “pay Pro money for a reason that is not marketing” arguments. Graphite is a feel. Anti-slip is a mechanical fact. If you already know you want to flip firmness, budget a €10 grip layer rather than stepping up to €359 for a coating you cannot have on a reversible core.
The Height Clash: 6 cm Including Cover vs 5 cm in the FAQ
Same family of leftover copy as the Pro’s 9 cm / 8 cm. Shopping copy uses 6 cm including the cover. The comparison FAQ still says 5 cm of foamversus 8 cm on the Pro. Cover-on versus foam-only. Nobody cleaned it up when Flip became Original. We quote both. We do not invent a third number with a tape measure we did not publish.

Why the thinner number is a feature for some buyers: fitted sheets. Six centimetres of extra loft is less likely to ping a standard Irish deep-fitted sheet off a thick hybrid than nine. If the Pro’s hotel-topper height is the thing that would force a linen shop, this is the escape hatch — provided 5–6 cm is enough foam for the job. On a brutal firm mattress it may not be. That is when Pro height matters, sheets or no sheets.
Live with “about five to six centimetres.” Measure the unpacked pad on your mattress if a particular sheet is the constraint.
How We Rated It
Airgocell-up is the side-sleeper side. HRX-up is the back/stomach side. Neither is a 9 cm Pro cloud — it is a thinner, honest pad. Both faces often land mid-firm.
Enough to take the sting off a firm mattress. Not enough to hide a crater. Same physics as any topper.
Open-pored Airgocell breathes. It is not graphite ThermoSync. Hot sleepers who can stretch to the Pro will feel the gap.
This is the point. Two feels without buying two toppers. Siobhán flipped mid-week and it was not a gimmick. Flip the core.

The Case Against the Original Topper
We give this 4.4/5. The missing tenths are the jobs it will not do, even at a sale price.
1. It is not a cooling product
Open-pored Airgocell breathes. Graphite ThermoSync on the Pro pulls heat. Oisín felt the gap immediately. If summer nights are the reason you are shopping, this is the wrong SKU at any discount. Breathable is not the same as cool.
2. Thinner means less rescue on a brutal firm mattress
If you need a hotel cloud, 5–6 cm may not be enough. That is when Pro height matters. Aoife was happy on Airgocell on a firm spare bed; a truly board-like box-spring may want the extra loft. Do not assume the flip replaces centimetres.
3. No anti-slip, and it will not fix sag
Emma’s comparison is explicit on the coating. Physics is explicit on the hollow. You can add a grip layer; you cannot add a new mattress core with 5 cm of PU. If the bed has a body-shaped hole, walk away from both toppers.
When to walk away: you already know you want graphite and height; the mattress is sagging; or you thought Airgocell was memory foam. The 100-night trial covers a firmness experiment. It does not cover a cooling experiment you could have skipped by reading this page.
