The Rebrand: Premium Foam Became Adapt Cooling
If you bookmarked the Premium Foam Pillow, searched an old forum thread, or still have a box in the attic with that name on it: this is the same product. Emma folded the pillow into the Adapt family and added the word Cooling, which is the honest part of the rename — ThermoSync was already in the stack. We checked the live Irish listing against what Emma still publishes about construction. Millimetre thicknesses were unpublished then and they are unpublished now; we mark those as “—” rather than guessing with a tape measure we did not run.

Bottom line: the label on the box changed. If you already own a Premium Foam Pillow, you are sleeping on Adapt Cooling. Do not buy a second one thinking Emma invented a new foam recipe.

I run hot. That is not a personality. That is a face that is damp by 2am on a normal foam pillow, including Emma’s own firm Adapt — the one without ThermoSync, the one Emma’s copy admits keeps some heat in the gel layer. If you sleep hot and you like foam, Adapt Cooling is the Emma pillow to start with. Not the Hybrid. Not the Adapt. The cooling layer is the whole product. Everything else is loft tuning.
We did not put the 2,048-sensor mattress mat on a pillow. That rig is built for a mattress surface. Five of us slept on this thing: me (combo, hot, 80 kg), Aoife (side, cold, 65 kg), Ciarán (back, warm, 85 kg), Siobhán (combo, 70 kg) and Oisín (stomach, hot, 95 kg). I used two layers. Three felt like a wedge when I rolled onto my back. Oisín needed one. Aoife needed all three or her ear was on the mattress. Emma’s printed position guide is not marketing fluff. You feel the change the night you unzip it.
ThermoSync in a pillow is not the Original Pro mattress. The Pro uses a 20 mm graphite-foam sheet; this is a thinner climate slice sitting under your cheek. It will not refrigerate the room. Emma’s Irish product page does not overclaim graphite particles either — they talk about temperature-regulating foam, not sci-fi. What I actually noticed is simpler: I stopped waking as damp as I do on the firm Adapt. That is the review.

Quick Verdict for Irish Buyers
The Adapt Cooling is a medium-firm 40×70 foam pillow with three pull-out layers: ThermoSync (temperature-regulating foam), a soft HRX support layer, and gel memory foam. That is the German/EU foam size — narrower than a standard Irish 50×70 pillowcase, which will sit loose. Emma’s Irish page is explicit: keep all three for side sleeping, drop to two or three for back, one for stomach. That guidance matched what our testers felt. Aoife (side, 65 kg) needed the full stack. Oisín (stomach, 95 kg) was only comfortable once two layers came out.
Cooling is the reason this exists. ThermoSync in a pillow is a thinner slice of the same graphite foam Emma uses in mattresses and the Original Pro Topper — it will not freeze your face, but Seán and Oisín both stopped waking as damp as they do on the firm Adapt. The Ultra-Dry Plus knit cover is the other half of that job: it wicks, and it comes off for the wash.

The Three Foams, in Order
Emma lists four parts on the Irish product page: three foams plus the cover. Layer thickness in millimetres is unpublished — we are not inventing tape-measure numbers. What is published, and what you can feel, is the job of each layer. Unzip it on night one. Leaving all three in as a stomach sleeper will crank your neck; that is a setup error, not a product failure.
ThermoSync foam
—Graphite-infused climate layer. Emma says it helps hold a steadier temperature. In a pillow this is a thin slice of the same foam family used in Emma mattresses — not a fridge, and not the 20 mm ThermoSync sheet in the Original Pro mattress.
HRX foam
—High Resiliency Extra — the softest of the three foams here. Takes pressure off the head and neck rather than doing the cooling work.
Gel memory foam
—The hug layer. Slow-response foam that lets the head sink a little. Keep it in for side sleeping; stomach sleepers should consider removing it after ThermoSync if they still feel too high.
Ultra-Dry Plus cover
—Knitted, removable, washable. Moisture-wicking. Ours went through a wash after week one with no drama. The cover is part of the cooling story, not decoration.
ThermoSync in a Pillow Is Not a Mattress Layer
Most cooling-pillow copy in Ireland is gel packets, “breathable knit,” or a phase-change cover. ThermoSync is none of those. It is graphite foam — the same family Emma puts in the Original Pro mattress as a 20 mm climate sheet. In this pillow it is a thinner, unpublished slice. That volume difference is the whole explainer. A mattress layer can move heat out of a torso. A pillow layer can only work on the few centimetres under your cheek and neck.
It is not refrigeration
Nobody at Emma is claiming this pillow will drop your face temperature by a measured number of degrees. The Irish PDP talks about temperature-regulating foam, not graphite-particle theatre. That restraint is useful. Graphite in foam conducts heat through the layer; it does not pump heat out of the room. Once the foam itself warms up, the effect plateaus. A 20 mm mattress sheet has more thermal mass to work with. A pillow slice has less. Seán and Oisín still ran cooler than on the firm Adapt. That is a relative win, not a laboratory certificate.
Pillow vs Original Pro mattress
The Original Pro mattress puts ThermoSync where your torso lies, at a published 20 mm. This pillow puts ThermoSync where your head lies, at a thickness Emma has not published — so the comparison is architecture, not millimetres. If you already sleep on an Original Pro and you still wake with a hot face, the pillow is the remaining contact surface. If you sleep on a heat-holding mattress and expect this pillow to fix the whole bed, you will be disappointed. Buy the pillow for the head. Buy the mattress for the body.
The cover does half the work
Ultra-Dry Plus is a knit, not a gimmick gel packet you cannot see. It wicks. It zips off. We washed it after week one. Foam stays in the wardrobe those days. If you leave a damp cover on ThermoSync all summer, you are asking a climate foam to work through a wet sock. The cooling story is layer plus cover, not layer alone.
Honest caveat: we scored cooling from lived nights, not surface probes on a pillow. Menopause night sweats, sleep apnoea, or a medical cause of overheating will not be solved by graphite foam. Use the 30-night trial.
40×70 cm: The Irish Pillowcase Problem
This is the section most review pages skip, and it is the one that makes people angry on night one. SKU EPWDD040070AAA is 40×70 cm. The pillowcase you already own in Ireland is almost certainly 50×70. Ten centimetres of empty case on the short axis is not “a bit roomy.” It is a loose, sliding envelope. Hybrid and Comfort Cooling are 50×70. Adapt (the non-cooling foam cousin) is also 40×70, so swapping between the two Adapts does not fix the case. Swapping to Hybrid or Comfort Cooling does.

If case-fit is non-negotiable — matching a pair of 50×70 hotel cases, a gift set, a particular Oxford border — do not fight this SKU. Buy Hybrid or Comfort Cooling, or buy 40×70 cases. If cooling foam is non-negotiable, live with the loose case or change the linen. There is no Irish 50×70 Adapt Cooling on emma-sleep.ie at the time of writing.

The Case Against Adapt Cooling
We give it 4.4/5. We do not give it 5/5. The missing half-star is not a secret foam defect. It is three things you should know before the 30 nights start.
1. It is foam. It will never feel like a hotel cloud
If you want squash, you want Comfort Cooling (Outlast + Aerosoft), not this. Adapt Cooling is a supportive foam stack. People who bounce off memory foam on night one will bounce off this too, ThermoSync or not.
2. Too tall if you ignore the layer guide
All three layers as a stomach sleeper will crank your neck. You have to unzip it on night one. Returning a pillow because it felt too high with the factory stack in is wasting the 30 nights. Emma printed the recipe. Use it.
3. One size only — 40×70 cm — and a short trial
Not the common Irish 50×70 case. Hybrid and Comfort Cooling fill that case. And the pillow trial is 30 nights, not 200. Emma mattresses get 200 nights. Pillows get 30. Use them. Thirty nights is still better than most high-street pillows in Ireland, which often have no sleep trial at all.
