Emma vs IKEA ÅNNELANDWhich hybrid should you buy?

Two buyable hybrids in Ireland right now: the Emma Original on emma-sleep.ie, and ÅNNELAND on ikea.com/ie. Same job on paper — foam over pocket springs. The split that actually changes the till is Emma's 200-night full refund versus IKEA's 365-day Sleep on It exchange.

3+ years of independent testing for Irish consumersHow we testMeet the team

We slept on the Emma. We have not published an ÅNNELAND test.

Emma scores, quotes, and measurements on this page are copied from the published Original review. IKEA figures are the live ÅNNELAND listing on ikea.com/ie (article 004.817.54) — height, firmness label, prices, 10-year guarantee, Sleep on It terms. No invented tester numbers for ÅNNELAND. Emma has also refreshed the Original name since we slept on it; outlet Original+ is usually the stack in that review.

The short verdict

If you are torn between "just get an Emma" and "IKEA will do", stop comparing coil counts. Emma will collect a miss and refund you. IKEA will let you try the floor model, then exchange the slept-on mattress once in a year — same size, clean, no cash. That is the buy-or-skip call. The Emma we scored is still the default hybrid for 60–90 kg side and combo sleepers who buy online. ÅNNELAND is the default if you need a Dublin or Cork lie-down and you accept a swap instead of a refund.

Choose the Emma Original if…

  • You want a mattress we actually scored: 4.2 overall, 4.3 comfort, 4.5 motion isolation.
  • A full refund matters more than a longer calendar. 200 nights, free collection, money back — not a store credit.
  • You are a side or combo sleeper between 60 and 90 kg. That is Aoife and Siobhán's band on the published review.
  • You live nowhere near Ballymun or Cork and you do not want a €40 IKEA collection on a swap.

Choose ÅNNELAND if…

  • You want to lie on it first. IKEA Dublin and Cork have the floor. Emma is a box at the door.
  • A year to decide on feel is worth more than cash back — and you will use the one allowed exchange, same size.
  • The live Double ticket (€599 when we checked) is the number you can pay without waiting on an Emma sale.
  • You can get a Standard 135 × 190 onto the frame you own — not every IKEA bed is that size.

Health & medical disclaimer

Comfort quotes from our testers — and from IKEA's own product-page reviews — are not clinical findings. No mattress treats or cures pain. If you live with ongoing spinal, joint, or muscular pain, speak with your GP or a chartered physiotherapist before buying on the back of a comparison. See our back pain and side sleeper guides.

Trial vs exchange — the actual decision

Longer is not kinder. Emma's clock is shorter and pays cash. IKEA's clock is a year and pays another mattress. Read the trial policies guide if you want the Irish consumer-rights layer underneath both shops.

Emma — 200 nights, refund

  • Starts the day it is delivered. Buy on emma-sleep.ie for the full 200 nights (the Original review flags Wayfair at 100).
  • If it is wrong, you get a full refund. Collection is free. Emma's own help pages say allow up to 14 days after pickup for the money.
  • No store. No lie-down first. The trial is the showroom.

IKEA — 365 days, exchange

  • Sleep on It: one exchange within 365 days. Same size only. Mattress not dirty, marked or damaged. Proof of purchase required.
  • Pay the difference if you step up; IKEA refund card if you step down. Terms: if they cannot find a suitable alternative, no cash refund.
  • Collection listed at €40 in IKEA Ireland's Sleep on It terms; replacement delivery can cost extra. Or take it to the store yourself.

Unused is a different door. IKEA's ordinary 365-day returns still cover products in new, unused condition with original packaging. Once you have slept on ÅNNELAND, you are on Sleep on It, not a till refund. Do not mix those two policies when you budget the risk.

Honest trade-offs

Refund versus swap

Winner: Emma, if cash back is the safety net. Winner: IKEA, if a year on the clock and a floor model matter more.

Do not translate "365 days" as "better trial". Sleep on It is one clean, same-size exchange. Emma's 200 nights are fewer nights and a real refund. If you already know you hate boxed mattresses until you have lain on them, IKEA's Dublin and Cork floors solve a problem Emma cannot.

Cooling

Neither of these two is the hot-sleeper mattress.

Original cooling is 3.5/5 on the published review. Oisín noticed warmth after 3–4 hours. IKEA's own ÅNNELAND copy says memory foam reacts to body heat and can feel warmer. If that is the whole reason you are shopping, step out of this pair: Original Pro vs Original or the Elite / Airgrid review. See also best cooling mattress.

Edge and weight

Emma's edge is a known weak spot. ÅNNELAND's edge is an advert until we sit on it.

Original sit-edge sinkage was 4.5 inches against a 3.95-inch industry average. Siobhán said couples drift toward the middle. IKEA advertises firmer springs around the perimeter. That may be the better sit. We have not measured it, so it is not a 4.0 from us.

The Original review is blunt above 90 kg. Both brands' 10-year cover is structural, not "it still feels new". For heavier bodies, start with the heavy people guide rather than hoping ÅNNELAND's mini springs fix a weight problem we have not tested.

Showroom versus letterbox

IKEA if you need to lie down. Emma if you want the box and the refund.

Republic of Ireland IKEA floors: Dublin (Ballymun) and Cork. Belfast is a different IKEA site. Emma ships. IKEA will take the old mattress away for €40 at purchase — Emma still does not. More on the Dublin floor: best mattress stores Dublin. Cork: best mattress stores Cork.

Value

On a sale Double, Emma has often been the cheaper hybrid. On a full Emma ticket, ÅNNELAND can look simpler.

Never pay Emma RRP. The published Original review still uses ~€391 Single and €489–€524 Double as typical sale. emma-sleep.ie listed the Original from €589 when we checked this page. ÅNNELAND's Irish tickets were €300 / €599 / €699 / €799. Add IKEA delivery if you are not collecting. Add €40 if you need Sleep on It collected later.

What people actually said

Named testers below are from the Emma Original review only. The IKEA block is paraphrased from reviews sitting on the live Irish product page — not our diary.

Aoife — 65 kg, side, runs cold

Emma Original

"The foam wraps around my shoulder and hip exactly where it needs to." Shoulder map 8.8/10. Excellent match at her weight on the published review. We have no Aoife night on ÅNNELAND.

Ciarán — 85 kg, back, lumbar sensitivity

Emma, with a caveat

Impressed for a month on the Original, then foam softening and hips a fraction lower by week 6. "Not as good as on the firmer Original Lite." If you are shopping this pair for back support, the Emma is a known quantity with that fade noted — ÅNNELAND is still a guess from us.

Siobhán — 70 kg, combination, light sleeper

Emma motion

Partner movement on the Original was "a faint ripple instead of the full earthquake." Edge insecurity pushed them toward the middle. Couples who sit on the edge to dress should not assume IKEA's reinforced-edge copy beats a 3.0 we measured — we have not sat-tested it.

Oisín — 95 kg, stomach, runs hot

Neither is his brief

Original pelvis 5.0/10. "Any stomach sleeper over 80 kg should be looking at the Original Lite or something firmer." Heat after 3–4 hours. ÅNNELAND being IKEA's "top tier" in a shop recommendation does not make it a stomach-sleeper mattress we can recommend.

IKEA Ireland product-page reviews

Not our testers

On the live ÅNNELAND page: one Super King buyer found it firmer than the shop and still smelled it after two months; another called it firm without being hard; a third was heading back to exchange with morning back pain after two months, after staff called it top-tier.

That spread is why Sleep on It exists — and why it is an exchange, not a refund. Treat those as IKEA customers, not as Seán's team.

What is in the stack

Emma Original — 5 layers we measured, 25 cm

  1. Zip-off cover (~0.8 cm) — washable at 40°C; UltraDry is the Original+ variant
  2. Airgocell (~2.5 cm) — open-cell, the only cooling help
  3. MemoryAdapt (~3.0 cm) — 3–5 second contour; also the heat trap
  4. SupportBase HRX (~2.5 cm) — transition onto the coils
  5. 5-zone InfinitySpring (~15.8 cm) — 430–900 coils by size; Double 645

Live emma-sleep.ie Original copy now talks about more MemoryAdapt and a comfort-foam edge. That is the refreshed SKU we have not re-slept.

ÅNNELAND — IKEA's published layers, 24 cm

  1. Soft washable cover
  2. Plush foam — IKEA: sink-in feel, pressure spread, responsive to movement
  3. Memory foam — IKEA: slow response; can feel warmer
  4. Mini pocket springs — independently wrapped, 5 comfort zones
  5. Reinforced edge — firmer perimeter springs (advertised)

IKEA also lists memory foam at 50 kg/m³ and other polyurethane foams at 33 kg/m³ on the product details. We did not cut a unit open.

Emma vs IKEA ÅNNELAND — common questions

Bottom line

Buy the Emma Original we tested if you want scores, a refund, and a hybrid that already has an 8-week diary on this site. Buy ÅNNELAND if you need the IKEA floor, you accept one clean same-size swap in 365 days, and the live ticket is the number you can pay today. If the Emma is the one but you sleep hot, this is the wrong comparison — use Original Pro vs Original. More of the range: Emma Sleep Ireland.
