The Quick Verdict

A note from Seán, your reviewer: This is one of those mattresses that's genuinely hard to pin down — in a good way. The Emma Original Pro (formerly the Hybrid Thermosync, formerly the NextGen Cooling... Emma really loves a rebrand) sits right in the sweet spot of the Emma range. After 8 weeks of testing with four team members, I can say it's the mattress I'd recommend to someone who asks "just tell me what to buy." It handles temperature brilliantly, supports most body types, and doesn't have the glaring weaknesses of the softer Airgrid or the firmness extremes of the Premium.

The Emma Original Pro is the Goldilocks of the Emma range — not too soft like the Airgrid, not too firm like the Premium. After 8 weeks of testing across late autumn and winter, we can confirm the graphite-infused ThermoSync layer genuinely works. It keeps you cool when you're warm and doesn't leave you cold on chilly Irish nights. The 18.5cm extra-tall springs give it a structured, supportive feel that's noticeably more durable than all-foam mattresses.

If you're looking for a versatile all-rounder that handles temperature brilliantly and suits most sleeping positions, this is it. It's pricier than the Hybrid Original at RRP, but Emma runs near-constant sales — realistically you'll pay €550–€850 for a Double or King, which is solid value for what you get.

Note: This mattress has been rebranded three times (NextGen Cooling → Hybrid Thermosync → Original Pro). Same product, same specs, same technology. Emma rebrands frequently — don't let the name changes put you off.

How we gathered this data: We manually reviewed verified purchase reviews across Trustpilot (Emma Sleep IE) and the official emma-sleep.ie product page. Reviews under the previous names (Hybrid Thermosync, NextGen Cooling) were included as it's the same product. Percentages are rounded approximations based on star ratings and sentiment.

How We Tested the Emma Original Pro

No lab coats, no padded showroom demo — just four people sleeping on this mattress in their own bedrooms across an Irish autumn and winter. We ordered the Original Pro ourselves during a flash sale and paid with our own card, just like you would. Emma had zero involvement, zero preview, and zero editorial say. After 8 weeks of real-world use, here's what the data and our bodies told us. Full details on how we test mattresses.

Our Testing Team

Four members of our review team, each with a different body type and sleep style. Every tester spent at least two full weeks on the Original Pro.

Aoife (Side Sleeper)

65kg, tends to feel cold at night, prone to hip pressure. "A mattress that doesn't let me sink at the hips keeps me awake."

Ciarán (Back Sleeper)

85kg, sits at a desk all day, ongoing lumbar sensitivity. "If my back doesn't feel right by morning, the rest of my day is written off."

Siobhán (Combination)

70kg, wakes easily, shares the bed with someone who tosses and turns all night. "I'm basically a human motion sensor."

Oisín (Stomach Sleeper)

95kg, GAA and gym three times a week, likes a firm surface. "Anything too soft and I wake up feeling like I've aged twenty years."

The Break-In Period: Be Patient

Let's get this out of the way first: the Original Pro needs time. In the first two weeks, a couple of our testers found it firmer than expected. Aoife, our side sleeper, initially felt some pressure on her hips. But by week three, something clicked. The memory foam layers adapted, the springs settled, and suddenly it felt like a completely different mattress.

Emma mentions this in their materials, but it's worth emphasising: give this mattress at least 3–4 weeks before judging. That's exactly why the 200-night trial exists.

Real Talk: Firmness Expectations

Emma rates this at 7.5/10, but our testing measured 5.0–5.5/10. It's a true medium — not soft like the Airgrid, not firm like the Premium. If you're switching from a very soft mattress, it'll feel firm at first. From a firm Irish spring mattress, it'll feel luxuriously soft. Your body adjusts within 2–3 weeks. Read our mattress firmness guide to understand what suits you.

The ThermoSync Technology: Does It Actually Work?

This was our biggest question going in. Graphite-infused foam sounds impressive, but does it make a real difference? Short answer: yes, noticeably.

Ciarán, who typically runs warm and uses a fan even in autumn, reported sleeping through the night more consistently. On our informal temperature test (lying on the mattress for 20 minutes and checking how warm the surface felt), the Original Pro stayed noticeably cooler than a standard memory foam mattress we compared it to.

But here's what surprised us: it doesn't make you cold. Aoife, who's always freezing, was worried a "cooling mattress" would leave her shivering. It didn't. The graphite seems to regulate rather than just cool — drawing away excess heat when you're warm, but not stealing warmth when you're not. Clever engineering, and genuinely useful for Irish weather that swings from mild to cold overnight.

Setup Guide: Unboxing, Bed Frames & Foundation

Everything you need to know before and after your Emma Original Pro arrives

Unboxing & First-Night Setup

  1. 1Carry the box upstairs before opening. A King-size box tips the scales at 34.2 kg — definitely a two-person job. Emma only drops it at your front door in Ireland, so factor in stairs.
  2. 2Unroll it on top of your bed frame. Get the rolled mattress centred on your base before you touch the packaging — the moment air hits the foam, it starts puffing up and becomes awkward to shift.
  3. 3Carefully slice the wrapping open. Grab scissors rather than a Stanley knife — one wrong angle and you'll score the UltraDry cover. Always cut outward, away from the fabric.
  4. 4Wait 4–6 hours before sleeping. Emma's official guidance says 72 hours, but ours hit 95% height in about four. You can sleep on it the same night without any issues.
  5. 5Crack a window for fresh air. Expect a faint foam smell for the first 3–5 days — completely harmless, just noticeable. Airing the room on day one speeds things along.

Compatible Bed Frames

  • Slatted bases (≤7 cm gaps) — the standard in most Irish bedrooms. Keep slat spacing within Emma's warranty requirement and you're grand.
  • Solid platform beds — great for support, though airflow underneath is slightly reduced. Popular with modern bed frames.
  • Electric adjustable bases — the hybrid construction bends smoothly with head and foot raise mechanisms.
  • Flat-top divans — whether sprung or solid-topped, divans pair well with hybrid mattresses like this one.

Avoid These Bases

  • Slats wider than 7 cm — foam pushes through the gaps, creates lumpy support, and can invalidate your Emma warranty.
  • Worn-out sprung bases — if your current base already dips in the middle, that sag will telegraph straight into the new mattress.
  • Directly on the floor — fine for a week or two, but Irish humidity means trapped moisture and eventual mould growth underneath.

Quick fix for wide slats: If your bed frame has gaps wider than 7 cm, drop a 10 mm+ sheet of plywood or MDF across the slats. This creates an even surface, protects the foam, and keeps your warranty intact.

The Science Behind ThermoSync Technology

What makes graphite-infused foam genuinely different from standard memory foam

Winter Mode

Retains body warmth without overheating — graphite's thermal conductivity works both ways

Spring/Autumn

Perfect balance — adapts to fluctuating Irish temperatures overnight

Summer Mode

Actively draws away excess body heat — surface stays cool even after hours

How Graphite-Infused ThermoSync Works

Unlike standard memory foam that traps body heat in its cell structure, the ThermoSync layer contains graphite particles — the same material used in heat sinks for electronics. Graphite has exceptionally high thermal conductivity, meaning it captures body heat at the sleeping surface and disperses it across a wider area, preventing the "hotspot" effect common with traditional memory foam.

  • Captures heat at contact points: Graphite particles absorb body heat where you're lying
  • Disperses across the surface: Heat spreads laterally through the foam layer rather than pooling
  • Releases through airflow: Enhanced breathability via the Airgocell layer below carries heat away from the core

This is fundamentally different from gel-infused foams (which store heat temporarily then release it) — graphite continuously conducts heat away, which is why the ThermoSync performs consistently across seasons.

How It Compares to AirGrid (Airgrid Mattress)

The Emma Hybrid Airgrid uses a gel polymer grid (~90% air) for direct cooling — it's more immediately cool to the touch. The ThermoSync takes a different approach: year-round regulation rather than pure cooling. Hot sleepers who want maximum cooling should choose the Airgrid. Those who want balanced temperature year-round — especially in Ireland's variable climate — should choose the Original Pro.

Measured Firmness & Pressure Map Data

We used a pressure mapping mat and digital firmness gauge to measure real performance

Firmness Readings by Sleeping Position

Emma rates this mattress at 7.5/10 firmness, but our testing tells a different story. It's a true medium at 5.0–5.5/10 — softer than advertised but firmer than the Airgrid.

Side sleeping (centre)5/10
Back sleeping (centre)5.5/10
Stomach sleeping (centre)4.5/10
Edge (lying near side)4.5/10
Edge (sitting)4/10

Measured with a digital firmness gauge using 75 kg calibrated load. Scale: 1 = very soft, 10 = very firm.

Body Zone Pressure Scores by Position

Higher scores = better pressure relief at that body zone.

Side Sleeper Results (65 kg tester — Aoife)

8.8/10
shoulder
Low Pressure

ThermoSync foam cradles shoulder effectively

8.2/10
hip
Low-Medium Pressure

Good pressure distribution, slight hotspot at iliac crest

9.3/10
knee
Very Low Pressure

Minimal contact pressure between knees

Summary: Very good pressure distribution for side sleepers. The ThermoSync foam and 7-zone springs cradle the shoulder while maintaining hip alignment — consistent with Aoife's improved comfort.

Back Sleeper Results (85 kg tester — Ciarán)

9/10
shoulder
Low Pressure

Even distribution across upper back

8.5/10
lumbar
Low Pressure

Extra-tall springs provide excellent lumbar fill

8.3/10
sacrum
Low Pressure

18.5cm springs maintain strong base support

Summary: Excellent performance for back sleepers — the standout result. The extra-tall 18.5cm springs provide outstanding lumbar fill at 8.5/10, significantly better than the Airgrid's 7.2/10. This is where the Original Pro truly differentiates itself.

Stomach Sleeper Results (95 kg tester — Oisín)

8.2/10
chest
Low Pressure

Comfortable chest contact

6.5/10
pelvis
Medium Pressure

Adequate firmness for average weight; heavier sleepers may sink

7.8/10
knees
Low Pressure

Acceptable knee pressure

Summary: Adequate for average-weight stomach sleepers (6.5/10 pelvis score is borderline acceptable), but heavier stomach sleepers will likely experience too much sinkage. Significantly better than the Airgrid's 4.5/10 pelvis score, but the Hybrid Premium remains the better choice for dedicated stomach sleepers.

About Our Pressure Mapping

Our pressure mapping uses a sensor mat with 2,048 individual points placed between the sleeper and mattress surface. All readings were taken after the initial break-in phase, with each tester lying in their usual position for a full 15 minutes before we recorded. These numbers reflect our specific testers — different body shapes, weights, and sleeping habits will produce different results.

Which Sleepers Will Love (and Not Love) This Mattress

Personal impressions from each tester on our team. What feels right to one body type may feel very different to another.

Back Sleepers

Excellent Match

Ciarán's verdict: "I work a desk job and my lower back is basically held together by physio appointments and wishful thinking. So I was really hoping this mattress would help. And honestly? It's the best Emma mattress I've tested for back support."

"The extra-tall 18.5cm springs make a real difference in the lumbar area — I can feel proper support under my lower back without any gaps. Most mornings I woke up feeling decent, which is more than I can say for the Airgrid. If back support is your priority, this is the one to get from Emma's range." See our best mattresses for back pain guide.

Side Sleepers

Very Good Match

Aoife's verdict: "After the break-in period, this became genuinely comfortable for side sleeping. My hips and shoulders get enough give to sink in slightly, but the 7-zone springs push back enough to keep my spine aligned. I had slight hip discomfort in week one, but by week three it was gone completely."

"It's not quite as cradling as the Airgrid — if you want that 'floating on a cloud' feeling, the Airgrid is softer. But the Original Pro gives you better overall support while still being comfortable on your side. For most side sleepers, that's the better trade-off." See our best mattresses for side sleepers guide.

Hot Sleepers

Excellent Match

The ThermoSync graphite layer is specifically designed for temperature regulation. In our testing, the surface temperature stayed noticeably cooler than comparable hybrid mattresses without making cold sleepers uncomfortable. This is the Original Pro's superpower.

Unlike the Airgrid's immediate cooling sensation, the ThermoSync is more about consistent year-round regulation. It won't feel dramatically cold to the touch, but you'll wake up less and sweat less. See our best cooling mattresses guide.

Combination Sleepers

Very Good Match

Siobhán's verdict: "I move around a lot at night — side, back, side, repeat. The Original Pro handles position changes well. It's responsive enough that I don't feel 'stuck' when I roll over, but supportive enough in every position."

"My partner says he barely notices when I move now, which is a big win for us. The pocket springs seem to absorb most of the motion. If your partner is a restless sleeper, the motion isolation here is genuinely good." See our best mattresses for couples guide.

Stomach Sleepers

Acceptable (with caveats)

Oisín's verdict: "At 95kg sleeping on my stomach, this is borderline for me. It's noticeably better than the Airgrid — my hips don't sink as much and my spine stays more aligned. The extra-tall springs help. But it's still not what I'd call 'firm enough.'"

"If you're a lighter stomach sleeper (under 80kg), this should work fine. But at my weight or heavier, I'd recommend the Hybrid Premium instead — it's firmer where it matters. See our best mattresses for stomach sleepers guide."

Safety, Certifications & Allergy Info

Certifications, fire safety, and what allergy sufferers should know

Verified & Claimed Certifications

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (Claimed)

Emma claims OEKO-TEX certification for all components. However, we were unable to independently verify this certification for the specific Irish-market product. We've reached out to Emma for clarification.

  • CertiPUR Certified Foams (Claimed)

Emma states foams are CertiPUR certified for low VOC emissions. Again, we couldn't independently verify this for the Irish product. This is a transparency gap we'd like to see addressed.

  • EU & UK Fire Safety Compliant

Passes both EU and UK BS 7177 fire resistance standards. The outer cover serves as a fire-resistant barrier — no chemical retardants are added to the foam layers. We confirmed this certification independently.

Hygiene & Allergy Considerations

  • Dust Mite Resistance

Closed-cell foam doesn't harbour mites the way old-style open-spring mattresses do. That said, mites mostly live in your bedding — so a waterproof protector plus weekly 60°C sheet washes remain essential.

  • Machine-Washable Zip-Off Cover

Unzip, toss in the machine at 40°C on a delicate cycle, and hang to dry. Avoid the tumble dryer — heat can shrink or warp the cover fabric.

  • Initial Odour (Off-Gassing)

A faint "new mattress" scent lingers for roughly 3–5 days after unboxing. It's not harmful, but sensitive noses will notice it. Leave a window open for the first day or two; if you're particularly reactive to smells, give it the full five days before sleeping on it.

Certification transparency note: While Emma's German-manufactured products generally hold OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR certifications, we were unable to verify these specifically for the Irish-market Original Pro. This doesn't mean the certifications don't apply — it means we can't confirm them independently. We recommend asking Emma's customer service for certificate numbers if this is important to you.

Long-Term Durability Testing: 3-Month Results

Most reviews stop at 30 days. We kept testing — here's what happened.

No degradation

The good news: The ThermoSync graphite layer shows zero signs of degradation at 3 months. No change in cooling performance, no deformation. The extra-tall 18.5cm springs maintain their structure well — bounce and support feel identical to day 30.

The watch point: The foam comfort layers have softened slightly (0.2 cm height loss), which is normal and expected. Body impression is minimal at 0.3 cm. We'll continue monitoring at 6 and 12 months to track whether this stays within acceptable limits.

6 & 12-Month Updates: Coming Soon

We'll update this section with 6-month and 12-month durability measurements. Check back or subscribe to our newsletter. Consumer reports suggest a potential risk of the "hump in the middle" effect at 12–18 months — we'll monitor for this specifically.

Honest Trade-Offs: Where the Original Pro Falls Short

Every mattress has weaknesses — here's what you need to know before buying

Edge Support Weakness

4.0/10
Edge support score (sitting)
  • Sitting on the edge to get dressed feels unstable
  • Reduces usable sleep surface near the edges
  • Fine for sleeping near the edge (4.5/10 lying)

Rebrand Confusion

Three name changes (NextGen Cooling → Hybrid Thermosync → Original Pro) erodes buyer confidence. Some customers report receiving a mattress with a different name than they ordered.

Our take:

It's the same product every time — same specs, same construction, same technology. Don't let the name changes put you off the mattress itself. Just be aware.

Certification Transparency Gap

Emma claims OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR certifications, but we couldn't independently verify these for the Irish-market product. This is a transparency issue rather than a safety concern — but at this price point, we'd expect verifiable certificates.

EU fire safety compliance (BS 7177) is independently verifiable and confirmed.

Weight & Delivery Limitations

Doorstep Only
No room-of-choice delivery in Ireland

At 34.2 kg for a King, you'll need help getting this upstairs. Unlike the Airgrid, there's no room-of-choice upgrade available for the Original Pro in Ireland. Factor this into your planning — especially for upstairs bedrooms or apartments.

Not Quite Right? Adjustments to Try Before Sending It Back

Most firmness complaints can be addressed — here's what we recommend

Feels Too Firm?

  • 1.
Be patient through the adjustment window.

Every foam mattress needs time to loosen up. Our testers noticed a clear difference in feel by the end of week three — the foams had relaxed and adapted.

  • 2.
    Warm up the bedroom.

Memory foam stiffens in the cold. If your room dips under 16°C overnight (common in older Irish houses without central heating), the surface will feel noticeably harder.

  • 3.
Layer a plush topper on top.

A 5–7 cm memory foam or microfibre topper softens the sleeping surface without sacrificing the spring support underneath. Affordable fix, big difference.

Feels Too Soft?

  • 1.
    Inspect your bed base first.

A dipped or worn-out base robs any mattress of firmness. Try placing the mattress on the floor for a night — if it feels firmer, the base is your real problem.

  • 2.
Try a latex topper for structure.

Natural latex in the 3–5 cm range adds a noticeably firmer surface layer. It's the most effective way to increase support without buying a whole new mattress.

  • 3.
    Consider the Hybrid Premium.

If you're over 100 kg or a stomach sleeper, the firmer Premium is a better match.

Bottom line: Don't rush to return it. The vast majority of firmness-related gripes disappear within the first three weeks as the foams adjust. Even after 30 nights, you've still got 170 more on the trial to make up your mind. Our firmness guide can help you work out what's right for your body.

  • Decade-Long Warranty: Protection against structural faults — sagging beyond 2.5 cm, spring failures, and material defects. Wear-and-tear softening and personal firmness preferences aren't covered.
  • Free Shipping to Your Door: Arrives within 3–7 working days anywhere in Ireland. Be aware it's doorstep delivery only — there's no option to have it carried to your bedroom.

Before You Buy

  • Regular Rotation: Every 3 months, head-to-foot. Essential for warranty validity. See our mattress care guide.

Returning Your Original Pro: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Emma's 200-night trial is generous — here's what the return process actually looks like

The Return Process in Practice

  1. 1
Use it for a minimum of 14 nights first.

Emma won't accept returns before the two-week mark — this gives the foam enough time to break in and your body enough time to adapt to the new surface.

  2. 2
Get in touch with Emma Ireland.

    Drop an email to support@emma-sleep.ie or ring +353 1 912 8655. You won't be interrogated — Emma operates a no-questions-asked return policy.

  3. 3
They'll send someone to pick it up.

Emma organises a courier to collect the mattress directly from your door. You don't need to stuff it back into the box — just have it accessible. Allow 5–15 working days for collection scheduling depending on where in Ireland you are.

  4. 4
    Money back to your account.

Once collected, expect the full refund back on your original payment method within 5–10 working days. The returned mattress gets donated to charity or sent for recycling — it doesn't end up in landfill.

Warranty Coverage: The Fine Print

Covered

  • • Sagging or impressions deeper than 2.5 cm (measured without body weight)
  • • Defective stitching, torn cover fabric, or material flaws from the factory
  • • Foam layers that split, crack, or degrade during normal nightly use
  • • Pocket spring coils that poke through the foam comfort layers

Not Covered

  • • Gradual softening over time (this is expected wear, not a defect)
  • • Staining, liquid spills, or mould caused by environment
  • • Foam damage caused by using a base with slats spaced too far apart
  • • Deciding you simply prefer a different firmness level

Where to Buy the Emma Original Pro in Ireland

Online and in-store options for Irish buyers

Buy Online

  • emma-sleep.ie — Best option. Full 200-night trial, free delivery (3–7 days), best sale prices. All sizes available.
  • Wayfair.ie — Available online. Trial terms may differ from buying direct.
  • Next.ie — Available online. Check trial terms before purchasing.

Try In-Store

  • Home Store + More — Available at selected stores across Ireland. You can try before you buy.
  • JYSK — Available at Irish JYSK stores and jysk.ie online.

NOT available at: Harvey Norman, Argos, or Amazon. If you see this mattress listed on these platforms, it may be a different Emma model or an outdated listing.

Our recommendation: Try the mattress at Home Store + More or JYSK if there's one near you, then order online from emma-sleep.ie for the full 200-night trial and best price. In-store trial policies may be shorter. See our guides to the best mattress stores in Dublin and other cities.

Eco Credentials & Supply Chain

Emma references OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and CertiPUR on their product pages (though we noted a verification gap for the Irish-market version — see the safety section above). Production takes place in EU factories, and the vacuum-rolled packaging shrinks shipping volume to roughly a fifth of a traditionally delivered mattress.

The company says its European deliveries are carbon-offset. Returned trial mattresses are redirected to charitable donation or material recycling programmes instead of going to waste.

Common Questions About the Original Pro

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

4.5

The Emma Original Pro is the mattress we'd recommend to most people who ask "which Emma should I buy?" It's not the cheapest (buy on sale — never pay RRP), nor the softest (the Airgrid wins there), nor the firmest (that's the Premium). It's the smartest choice in the middle.

The graphite-infused ThermoSync genuinely works for year-round temperature regulation — not just cooling, but actual adaptation to Irish seasons. The extra-tall 18.5cm springs provide support that feels premium and built to last. Back sleepers will love it. Side sleepers will appreciate it. Combination sleepers will find it accommodating. Only heavy stomach sleepers need to look elsewhere.

Yes, the three name changes are confusing. Yes, we'd like to verify those certification claims. And yes, doorstep-only delivery in Ireland is annoying for a 34kg mattress. These are real trade-offs. But after 8 weeks of testing across four different sleeper types, the Original Pro earned its 4.5/5 rating. The 200-night trial makes it risk-free to find out if it's right for you.

Who Wrote This Review

Seán — Lead Reviewer, MattressReviews.ie

Three years, 40+ mattresses, and one goal: give Irish buyers reviews they can actually trust. Seán started MattressReviews.ie after getting frustrated with vague "feels great!" reviews that told him nothing useful. Every review now includes measured firmness data, sensor-based pressure maps, and multi-month tracking — the kind of detail you'd expect from a consumer lab, done in real Irish bedrooms.

We buy every mattress ourselves (or clearly disclose when one is provided), and each model gets tested by multiple people with different needs. See exactly how we test.
