Shopping for an orthopaedic mattress in Ireland can be confusing — the term isn't regulated, meaning any manufacturer can slap it on their packaging. That's why we've focused on mattresses with genuine credentials: designs developed with chiropractors, endorsements from professional bodies like the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), and construction specifically engineered for spinal support. We've compared three Irish brands dominating this space — The Spinery from Dún Laoghaire, King Koil handmade in Co. Kildare, and Respa crafted in Co. Meath — to help you find the right orthopaedic mattress for your needs and budget.

What Makes a Mattress Genuinely Orthopaedic?

The term "orthopaedic" isn't regulated — here's how to separate marketing from genuine spinal support.

Diagram of an orthopaedic zoned-support mattress — firmer support under the hips keeps the spine perfectly straight
What "orthopaedic" should mean — zoned construction that pushes back hardest under the hips, where your body is heaviest.

Professional Credentials

Look beyond marketing claims. Genuine orthopaedic mattresses are developed with input from chiropractors, physiotherapists, or carry endorsements from bodies like the International Chiropractors Association (ICA). King Koil's partnership with the ICA and The Spinery's chiropractor-designed approach are prime examples.

Spring System Quality

Orthopaedic mattresses typically use firmer spring systems. Look for specifications like '12.5 gauge' springs (lower gauge = thicker, firmer wire). Respa's RespaTech Ortho system and King Koil's heavy-duty coils are specifically engineered for enhanced support compared to standard mattresses.

Irish Manufacturing

All three brands we recommend manufacture in Ireland — King Koil in Co. Kildare since 1982, Respa in Co. Meath since 1947, and The Spinery designed in Dublin. This means quality control, easier warranty claims, and supporting local industry.

Material Transparency

Quality orthopaedic mattresses clearly list their materials and construction. Be wary of vague claims. The Spinery leads here with 100% natural latex and full ingredient disclosure. Check for edge support frames, airflow technology, and turnable designs for longevity.

The "Orthopaedic" Label: What It Really Means

Unlike medical devices, mattresses don't require certification to be called "orthopaedic" in Ireland or across the EU. This means a €200 mattress and a €2,000 mattress can both legally use the term. The difference lies in the construction, materials, and — crucially — whether healthcare professionals were genuinely involved in the design.

Our recommendations focus on mattresses where we can verify professional involvement: The Spinery was designed by chiropractor Dr Lawrence Woods with molecular biologist Dr Sinead Moore PhD; King Koil's Spinal Guard range is developed with the International Chiropractors Association; and Respa's Physiotech collection uses their strongest spring system specifically for orthopaedic-level support.

      Understanding Orthopaedic Mattresses in Ireland

What the term really means, how Irish brands compare, and where to buy with confidence.

      The Unregulated "Orthopaedic" Label

Unlike medical devices or pharmaceuticals, the term "orthopaedic" has no legal definition when applied to mattresses in Ireland or the EU. Any manufacturer can use it without meeting specific standards or obtaining certification. This means a cheap import and a €2,000 Irish-made mattress can both legally claim to be "orthopaedic."

What This Means For You: Don't buy based on the "orthopaedic" label alone. Look for specific credentials — chiropractor involvement in design, ICA endorsement, specified spring gauges, and transparent manufacturing. The brands we recommend all have verifiable professional input or use construction specifically engineered for enhanced support.

      Irish Orthopaedic Mattress Manufacturing

Ireland has a strong tradition of mattress manufacturing, with several brands producing orthopaedic options domestically. This offers advantages in quality control, warranty claims, and supporting local industry.

      The Spinery

      Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin

Founded by chiropractor Dr Lawrence Woods. Designs mattresses with molecular biologist Dr Sinead Moore PhD. Uses 100% natural latex with no synthetic materials. Operates Dublin showroom for testing.

      King Koil Ireland

      Kilcullen, Co. Kildare

Manufacturing since 1982. Part of global King Koil brand but independently Irish-made. Chiro-Span technology developed with International Chiropractors Association endorsement.

      Respa Beds

      Oldcastle, Co. Meath

Ireland's oldest mattress manufacturer, operating since 1947. Their Physiotech collection uses the RespaTech Ortho 12.5 gauge spring system — their firmest construction for orthopaedic support.

      Comparing Orthopaedic Technologies

Each brand takes a different approach to orthopaedic support. Understanding these differences helps match your needs to the right mattress.

      TechnologyBrandHow It Works
Natural LatexThe Spinery100% natural rubber latex provides responsive support that adapts to body contours while maintaining firmness. Chemical-free and naturally temperature-regulating.
Chiro-SpanKing KoilSteel bands across the centre third of the mattress provide targeted lumbar reinforcement. Works with ICA design input for spinal alignment.
RespaTech OrthoRespa12.5 gauge bonnell coil system — thicker wire than standard springs provides firmer resistance. Combined with edge support frames for stability.
Pocket SpringsKing Koil (2000)Individual pocketed springs respond independently to pressure. Higher spring counts (2000) provide more precise support mapping.

      What to Expect to Pay

Orthopaedic mattresses span a wide price range depending on materials, construction, and brand positioning. Here's a general guide for double mattress prices in Ireland:

      Budget: €300-€500

Entry-level orthopaedic like Respa Formation. Genuine orthopaedic spring system but fewer comfort layers. Good for guest rooms or those prioritising support over luxury.

      Mid-Range: €500-€900

King Koil Spinal Guard, Respa Backcare Supreme. Professional endorsements, quality construction, comfort layers on orthopaedic base. Best value for most buyers.

      Premium: €900+

The Spinery, King Koil Support Supreme 2000. Natural materials, advanced spring systems, maximum durability. Best for those prioritising long-term investment and specific needs.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about orthopaedic mattresses in Ireland.

Support starts with how you lie. A firm, supportive mattress works best paired with the right posture — see our guide to the best sleeping position for keeping your spine aligned through the night.

      Our Research Methodology

Our orthopaedic mattress recommendations are based on verifying professional credentials, confirming Irish availability, analysing construction specifications, and reviewing customer feedback. We prioritise mattresses with genuine healthcare professional involvement over those using "orthopaedic" purely as a marketing term.

      • Professional credentials verified (chiropractor design, ICA endorsement)
      • Irish manufacturing or availability confirmed
      • Spring gauge and construction specifications analysed
      • Customer reviews from verified Irish purchasers researched
      • Price points confirmed in Euros from Irish retailers
      • Trial periods and warranty terms verified
      • Showroom availability documented for testing options
      • Updated regularly to reflect current availability and pricing

      A Note on "Orthopaedic" Claims

We want to be transparent: the term "orthopaedic" is unregulated in Ireland and the EU. Any mattress can legally use this term regardless of construction or professional input. Our recommendations focus on mattresses where we can verify specific credentials — whether that's ICA endorsement, documented chiropractor involvement in design, or specified construction that genuinely differentiates from standard mattresses.

If you have chronic back pain or spinal conditions, we recommend consulting with a healthcare professional (GP, physiotherapist, chiropractor) before purchasing. A mattress can support recovery and comfort but isn't a substitute for medical treatment. Many retailers offer trial periods — take advantage of these to ensure any mattress works for your specific needs.
