Product of the Year 2026: A Vote, Not a Lab
Emma displays Product of the Year 2026 on emma-sleep.ie. The sticker is real. What it measures is not. Product of the Year in the Pillow category is a UK FMCG consumer vote run with Kantar — about 8,000 shoppers in that programme — reported in March 2026. It is not a sleep-lab result, not an Irish award, and not our test. Some coverage lists the winner as the Emma Original Hybrid Pillow. Same dual-sided design: microfibre one face, foam the other, removable visco in the middle.

Product of the Year is a consumer-vote sticker, not a lab certificate. I am going to say that twice because Emma’s product page will say it once, quietly, and the badge will do the rest of the talking. We still like this pillow. We like it because two people can stop arguing about squash versus support, and because €76.30 in the Late Summer sale is the cheapest Emma pillow we would actually recommend. We do not like it as a cooling pillow, because it is not one.
I used foam-side-up for an hour, then flipped to microfibre and stayed there. For me it is a comfort pillow that can get firmer, not a climate pillow. I still ran warmer than on Adapt Cooling — no ThermoSync, no Outlast, just a breathable cover. If your problem is a damp face at 2am, spend the extra. If your problem is “she wants cloud, he wants foam, we have one guest-room pillow budget,” this is the SKU.
Five of us slept on both faces, with the visco in and out: me, Aoife (side, 65 kg), Ciarán (back, 85 kg), Siobhán (combo, 70 kg) and Oisín (stomach, 95 kg). Siobhán and Dara could share one model with different faces. Aoife still wanted more loft than this gives for side sleeping. Oisín on his stomach used microfibre with the visco out. Expert Reviews’ note matches what we felt: pull the insert and the soft/firm distinction gets muddy. Do not treat that as a third pillow.

Quick Verdict for Irish Buyers
The Hybrid is the pillow you buy when two people share a bed and will not agree, or when you yourself cannot decide between squash and support. One face is polyester microfibre. The other is firm memory foam. A visco layer unzips out to drop the height without changing which face is up. That is the whole product, and it is a better idea than most “one pillow for everyone” marketing.

The Flip: Two Faces, One Insert, Not Three Pillows
Marketing will imply you are buying three feels. You are buying two, plus a loft wafer. Sleep on the microfibre face for squash. Sleep on the foam face for support. Unzip the visco insert to drop height. Those are two axes — feel and loft — and they are not independent once the insert comes out.
What Expert Reviews noticed — and we agree
Independent testers at Expert Reviews noted that removing the visco insert collapses the soft/firm distinction. That matches our nights. With the wafer in, microfibre-up and foam-up are clearly different jobs. With the wafer out, both faces lose some of the architecture that made the flip feel like two products. We do not recommend sleeping without the insert as a third distinct pillow. If you need that much less loft, you probably wanted a thinner pillow, not a Hybrid with its middle pulled out and called a new SKU.
Flip changes feel; insert changes height
Spend the first two nights on opposite faces before you decide it is “too soft” or “too firm.” Couples can stop at the flip: Siobhán took microfibre, Dara took foam on his own Hybrid — same SKU, two arguments avoided. Solo sleepers who also need less height should remove the visco after they have chosen a face, not before. Order of operations matters. Face first, loft second.
Less precise than Adapt Cooling’s three foams
You get a flip and one insert, not three distinct foams with Emma’s 1 / 2–3 / 3 position recipe. Combination sleepers (Siobhán’s use case) get “soft enough to start, foam enough if the neck complains.” Side sleepers who need a high, solid loft still wanted Adapt Cooling. That is not a failure of the Hybrid. It is the limit of a two-face pillow with one wafer.
What You Are Actually Flipping
Emma’s layer diagram on emma-sleep.ie lists four parts: microfibre fill, a removable visco foam wafer, a micro-elastic cover, and a firm memory-foam base. Exact fill weights and millimetre thicknesses are unpublished — marked “—” rather than guessed.
Polyester microfibre face
—The hug side. Fibre fill, not down. It will never have the collapse of a cheap hollowfibre pancake if you shake it — but it is the soft half of the award story. Exact fill weight is unpublished.
Removable visco layer
—A foam insert you take out to lower loft. This is the height adjustment, not the flip. Leave it in for side sleeping; take it out for stomach. Independent testers (Expert Reviews) note that with the insert out, the soft/firm distinction collapses — we do not treat “visco out” as a third distinct pillow.
Firm memory-foam face
—The support side. Sleep on this if you want a foam pillow without buying the Adapt stack. Millimetre thickness unpublished.
Micro-elastic cover
—Padded, breathable, the bit against your face. Removable with the rest of Emma’s pillow covers. No ThermoSync. No Outlast.
How We Rated It
The microfibre face is the friendly side. The foam face is a proper pillow, not a brick. Most of the team landed on microfibre-up for falling asleep and did not bother flipping.
Foam face plus the visco insert is enough for a side sleeper. Pull the visco and it drops for back/stomach. Not as tunable as the three-foam Adapt stack.
Breathable cover, no ThermoSync, no Outlast. Fine for neutral sleepers. Seán still ran warmer than on Adapt Cooling.
Two feels (flip) plus one removable foam wafer. That is more versatility than a stuffed pillow, less than Adapt Cooling’s three foams.
€76.30 (was €109) is the cheapest Emma pillow we would actually recommend. A pair is €141.70.

The Case Against the Hybrid Pillow
We give it 4.5/5 as an everyday compromise. We do not give it 5/5 as a specialist pillow, and the missing half-star is the point of this section.
1. No ThermoSync, no Outlast
Cooling is “breathable cover” only. Hot sleepers should look at Adapt Cooling (graphite foam) or Comfort Cooling (Outlast). Seán still ran warmer on this than on Adapt Cooling. If a Dublin summer night is the problem, this is the wrong listing.
2. Less precise than the three-layer Adapt stack
You get a flip and one insert, not three distinct foams. Aoife still wanted more height for side sleeping. Pulling the visco to chase a third feel, as Expert Reviews flagged, muddies the soft/firm difference. Do not sleep without the insert and call it a new pillow.
3. The award is a halo — and there is no king size
Product of the Year is a vote, not a lab result. Useful halo. Not a substitute for trying it for 30 nights. And 50×70 only: no king size on the Irish site. If you wanted a bigger pillow, this listing will not grow.
