Emma Original vs Original+Which should you buy?

Two Originals on emma-sleep.ie. Same family name. Different constructions. The sleep test is on the Original review — that bed is Original+ in outlet now. This is the buy or skip call between that outlet listing and the new Original on the main page.

3+ years of independent testing for Irish consumersHow we testMeet the team

Emma upgraded the Original. Same name.

You are looking at the Original we slept on — Emma now sells that construction as Original+ outlet, usually cheaper. There is also a new Original under the same name, mainly stronger edges, on the main Original page. Orange below is Original+. Green on the review page is the new Original. We have not slept on the new one yet.

The short verdict

Default to Original+ unless you have a reason not to. That is the 5-layer hybrid in the Original review — side and combo sleepers 60–90 kg, value score 4.6, cooling the weak spot at 3.5. The new Original is a live product, not a rumour, but it is not in our test bedroom. If the decision is actually ThermoSync, that is Original Pro vs Original, not this page.

Choose Original+ if…

  • You want the mattress this site actually scored. 4.2 overall, eight weeks, four testers.
  • You are a side or combo sleeper between 60 and 90 kg. That is Aoife and Siobhán's sweet spot on this construction.
  • Price is part of the call. Outlet is usually cheaper than the main Original page.
  • You can live with a weak sit-edge (3.0) and average cooling (3.5).
Full Original review (this is Original+)

Choose the new Original if…

  • You specifically want Emma's current Original construction — 6 layers on their page, extra MemoryAdapt, wraparound comfort-foam edge.
  • Stronger edges are the reason you would skip outlet. That is Emma's claim. It is not a score from us yet.
  • You are fine buying a live SKU we have not slept on, on the 200-night trial.
  • You are not mixing this up with Original Pro. Pro is ThermoSync and a separate review.

Category scores, side by side

Original+ scores are the published /emma-original review, not a new test. The new Original has no column of stars — we have not scored it. Full methodology: how we test.

Honest trade-offs

Cooling

We only have a score for Original+ (3.5).

On Original+, MemoryAdapt traps heat. Oisín noticed warmth after 3–4 hours, especially at hips and shoulders. Airgocell helps airflow; it does not cancel the memory-foam hotspot. The review tells hot sleepers to look at Elite or Simba, not to upgrade the cover and hope.

The new Original's layer list on emma-sleep.ie does not name Airgocell. It lists extra memory foam instead. That is a construction difference, not a cooling win. We will not call it cooler — or warmer — until someone here has slept on it. If heat is the whole decision, that is still the Elite / Airgrid or Original Pro, not a coin-flip between these two Originals.

Edge support

Original+ is weak (3.0). The new Original's stronger-edge line is Emma's, not ours.

Original+ sit-edge sinkage was 4.5 inches against a 3.95-inch industry average; Siobhán said couples drift toward the middle. Emma's current Original page sells a comfort-foam edge and “improved edge support.” That is the main published change, and it is why some shoppers will skip outlet. We have not sat on that SKU. If edge is why you would pay more, you are buying a claim plus the 200-night trial — not an MRI-style confirmation from this team.

Durability and weight

Only Original+ has follow-up measurements. We will not copy them onto the new Original.

Original+ after 6 months: 0.6 cm height loss, 0.8 cm body impressions — acceptable on our unit — but buyer reviews flag a sagging pattern for 90 kg+ between 6 and 24 months. Realistic lifespan cited on that review: 5–8 years for average-weight sleepers, with rotation every 3 months.

The new Original has no height check, no impression reading, and no weight-band from this house. Emma's advertised cap on the bed we tested was 130 kg per side; our sweet-spot note under 90 kg is for Original+ only.

Value

Original+ wins on the numbers we already published — and it is the outlet bed.

Never pay Emma RRP if you can avoid it. Original+ Single sale around €391 (RRP €559) in the review; hub typical Single promo €479–€559 on the 31 August stamp. The current Original listed a from-price of €589 on 9 September 2026. Outlet is usually cheaper. That extra on the main page is for a different stack and an untested edge, not for ThermoSync — ThermoSync is still Pro.

What the testers actually said

These quotes are from the published Original review — the Original+ construction. Nobody here has a diary for the new Original.

Aoife — 65 kg, side, runs cold

Original+

Original+: "The foam wraps around my shoulder and hip exactly where it needs to." Shoulder map 8.8/10. Excellent match at her weight. No quote on the new Original.

Ciarán — 85 kg, back, lumbar sensitivity

Not his favourite Emma

Original+: Impressed for a month, then foam softening and hips a fraction lower by week 6. "Not as good as on the firmer Original Lite." His Pro quote does not belong on this page.

Siobhán — 70 kg, combination, light sleeper

Motion yes · edge no

Original+: Partner movement was "a faint ripple instead of the full earthquake." Edge insecurity pushed them toward the middle. That edge complaint is exactly what Emma now says the new Original is for. We have not checked.

Oisín — 95 kg, stomach, runs hot

Not his bed

Original+: Pelvis 5.0/10. "Any stomach sleeper over 80 kg should be looking at the Original Lite or something firmer." Heat after 3–4 hours. Do not assume the new Original fixes either problem.

What you are paying for in the stack

Original+ — 5 layers, 25 cm (we measured)

  1. Zip-off cover (~0.8 cm) — washable at 40°C; UltraDry on some units
  2. Airgocell (~2.5 cm) — open-cell, the only cooling help
  3. MemoryAdapt (~3.0 cm) — 3–5 second contour; also the heat trap
  4. SupportBase HRX (~2.5 cm) — transition onto the coils
  5. 5-zone InfinitySpring (~15.8 cm) — edge-to-edge; 430–900 coils by size

New Original — 6 layers (Emma's PDP, 9 Sep 2026)

  1. Zip-off cover — washable at 40°C
  2. Enhanced MemoryAdapt foam — Emma says twice the memory foam
  3. Upgraded soft foam — extra comfort slab on their page
  4. SupportBase — same job as the transition foam on Original+
  5. 5-zone springs with a new comfort-foam edge
  6. Bottom grip cover — Emma counts this as a layer; we did not on Original+

Layer six on the new Original is the non-slip base. Our Original+ review excluded that from the five-layer count. Do not treat 6 vs 5 as a quality ranking on its own — the felt differences, when we have them, will be the extra foam and the edge, not the numbering.

Price bands we have already published

Original+ sale ranges come from the Original review. The new Original from-price is Emma's live listing on 9 September 2026 — not a second review table. Buy on emma-sleep.ie for the full 200-night trial — Wayfair is 100 nights on the Original+ review.

Pillow & topper

Match the setup

Whichever Original you buy, start with a pillow from the same shop. Only add a topper if that mattress still feels too firm after a few weeks.

Default pillow

Emma Hybrid Pillow

50×70 cm

The 50×70 flip pillow is the default on either Original if you do not sleep hot — leave it on sale, and you are not buying cooling you skipped in the mattress.

Warm or hot sleeper

Emma Adapt Cooling Pillow

40×70 cm

Original+ cooling was 3.5 in our test. The new Original is untested for heat. Put ThermoSync at your face instead of stacking another layer on the bed.

If it’s too firm

Emma Original Topper

6 cm

The 6 cm flip topper is the fix when the Original+ still feels too firm. Skip it if the feel is already right. We have no topper note for the untested new Original.

Slide the roll onto the frame before you unwrap. Compatible bases: Emma Original Bed, Emma Metal Bed, or best beds.

Emma Original vs Original+ — common questions

Bottom line

Original+ is the mattress we can stand over — 4.2, eight weeks, the 5-layer hybrid now in outlet, usually cheaper. The new Original is the current 6-layer listing with Emma's wraparound-edge claim, and it is not in our scores. If you want the tested bed, buy Original+. If you want the current construction, buy it knowing the trial is doing the work our bedroom has not done yet. For ThermoSync, leave this page and read Original Pro vs Original.
