A mattress protector is not a comfort product. I put this on Emma beds we already know, because the job is whether the membrane leaks, rustles, or cooks you. It feels like a fitted sheet with a purpose — not plush.
Emma’s page wants two emotions at once: “soft & silent” in the features, and “the polyurethane membrane might feel stiff and noisy at first” in the FAQ. Both can be true if you wash it before night one, which they also tell you to do. We washed first. First-night crinkle was there. It was not a picnic-blanket rustle after that.
I run hot. This did not cool me. It also did not trap me the way a cheap vinyl cover did a decade ago. Hygiene layer, not ThermoSync. If you came here from a cooling-mattress tab, close this page.

Quick Verdict for Irish Buyers
The current Waterproof listing is a dark-grey stretch cover that goes on like a fitted sheet, with a polyurethane membrane Emma calls 100% waterproof and breathable. It is cut to Emma mattress sizes, grips a mattress at least 10 cm thick, and is sold as fitting mattress and topper up to 35 cm. That last number is the whole product if you own a 27 cm Original Elite or Original Pro and are eyeing a topper. It is wasted money if your bed is a 15-year-old 18 cm open-coil and you just need to stop the dog.
Trial is 14 nights — statutory, not a goodwill extra. Emma T&Cs clause 20 lists “Bed linens & mattress protector” at 14 + 0 days. Clause 19.1 excludes the protector from any guarantee, next to the Autumn & Spring Duvet. The PDP still shows a Quality Guarantee badge. Believe the PDF.
Bottom line: buy the €99 Waterproof if you just spent real money on an Emma mattress (or mattress + thinner topper) and want a washable barrier that actually fits the stack. Skip it if you wanted cooling, a 200-night trial, or a €20 supermarket cover for a shallow mattress.

Why a Protector — And Why This Is Not a Comfort Upgrade
Irish bedrooms are damp more often than marketing photos admit. Foam is a sponge. Emma’s FAQ lists stains, moisture, allergens, pets. Keep those. Throw out “extra comfort.” A membrane does not make a mattress nicer. It makes the mattress washable-by-proxy. Still the highest-leverage mattress-care spend after “do not jump on it.”
What it actually does
Fitted-sheet construction. Elastic Emma says stays put when you turn. A membrane that is supposed to stop liquid reaching the tick. You still put a proper fitted sheet on top — Emma does not sell those. You still rotate the mattress. The protector is the layer you can wash at 40°C when the toddler or the Labrador votes otherwise.
Three claims on the Irish FAQ: waterproof; “soft & silent” versus noisy covers; protects mattress and topper. The third is the useful one if you own an Original Topper or are considering the Original Pro Topper. Intended use: protector over the whole stack, sheet over the protector. Not a zip-on allergen encasement. Our care guide still prefers fitted over fully encased in damp Irish rooms unless you have a specific mite protocol.
Not ThermoSync. Emma’s membrane copy says waterproof yet ventilated, “no more overheating.” That is a comparison with plastic rustle-bags, not with graphite foam. Hot sleepers should fix the mattress or the topper, not the hygiene layer.
The 35 cm Problem: Mattress + Topper Is Not Always Under the Skirt
Protector FAQ on emma-sleep.ie: fits mattresses and toppers up to 35 cmdeep; mattress at least 10 cm thick; dark grey, soft, stretchable. Mattress FAQs on Original / Elite / Pro pages: check height (22–27 cm), buy deep-fit sheets especially for Elite and Pro at 27 cm, and “the Emma Mattress Protector fits all our mattresses and also leaves room for a topper.” Those two sentences only stay friends if your particular topper is thin enough.

Cover-on versus foam-only on the toppers is leftover copy we already documented: Original Topper 6 cm shopping / FAQ 5 cm foam; Pro Topper 9 / 8. We add published numbers. We do not invent a tape-measure third figure. If you already sleep on Elite + Pro Topper, do not assume the 35 cm skirt will swallow it because a mattress FAQ said “room for a topper.”
Minimum 10 cm mattress thickness is the other edge case: guest foam, kids’ thin pads, some sofa-beds. The elastic needs a vertical face. Too thin and it shrugs off.
Intended order
Protector over the stack (mattress, or mattress + topper). Fitted sheet over the protector. Do not trap a topper above the membrane and then wonder why the topper takes the spill.
Stay-put claim
“Elastic bands that adapt.” Fitted-sheet architecture. Ours stayed on a 25 cm Original and a 27 cm Pro. We did not force the 36 cm paper stack.
Deep-fit sheets — Emma does not sell them
Mattress FAQs: check height (22–27 cm), buy deep-fit sheets yourself, especially for Elite and Pro at 27 cm. Bed linens in the T&Cs are a returns category, not a shop shelf. The sheet pocket has to clear mattress + protector fabric + any topper. Pair with the Spring & Autumn Duvet if you want Emma’s lighter cover — also 14 nights, also no guarantee. This SKU does not replace linen.
Noise: Emma Admits the Membrane. Wash It Anyway.
Two voices, same domain. Feature block: “Soft & Silent Comfort.” FAQ: the PU membrane might feel stiff at first; noise fades; wash before first use to soften faster. That FAQ is the adult in the room. A PU film rustles until it is flexed and washed.
What we heard
Unwashed, night one, you hear it when you turn — not a bin-liner, not silent. After the 40°C wash and air-dry, Siobhán’s partner test dropped from “I can hear the cover” to “I notice it if I listen.” Seán stopped mentioning it after night three. Not a laboratory dB reading.
What “silent” is doing
Comparison with the rustle-bags everyone remembers from 2009. If Emma’s claim holds after the wash, this is fitted-sheet-ish, not camping-mat-ish. If it still crackles after a wash and a week, use the 14 nights. Do not wait for a guarantee clause 19.1 already refused you.
Fitted-sheet style helps versus a zip-all vinyl encasement. Still: wash before first use, as they tell you. Skipping that step and then writing “Emma lied about silent” is testing the stiff factory crease.
Wash and Care: 40°C, Air Dry, No Tumble, No Iron
Emma’s care FAQ is specific, which is useful. Machine wash at 40°C. Avoid hot water before washing. Monthly, or immediately after spills. Clean a spill straight away. Do not tumble dry. Do not iron. Air dry, “to keep its quality and waterproof performance intact.” That last clause is why you do not throw it in with the towels on high heat.
- 40°C — not the 60°C mite-wash some generic Irish care pages use. This membrane has a published ceiling.
- Do not tumble dry. Air dry. Heat vs waterproof film.
- Do not iron. Melt PU once and the SKU is a fitted sheet with holes.
- Monthly, or after spills — plus a first wash to soften the membrane.
Our mattress care article still talks about 60°C on generic protectors — the household mite number. This SKU’s published limit is 40°C. Follow the label. If you need a 60°C medical encasement, you are in a different category Emma does not sell.
Air-dry in August is easy. Air-dry in a one-bed in January is a dehumidifier. Do not “just this once” the tumble dryer.
Clearance €43.45 vs Waterproof €99
Checked on emma-sleep.ie in August 2026. The Waterproof tile: €99. The clearance tile labelled Emma Mattress Protector: €43.45, was €79, 45% off, “last units.” Same page, same 4.8/5 badge, same 14-night trial chrome. Different product names. Only the Waterproof tile restates dark grey, stretch, 35 cm. We are not going to write a second review of stock Emma is trying to finish.
Emma’s own 4.8 from 239 reviews is a blended badge on a URL that now sells two names. Useful as “lots of people bought a protector from Emma.” Useless as a score for the dark-grey Waterproof SKU specifically. Our 4.2 is for that current listing, lived-in, with the T&Cs read.

High-street Ireland still sells white terry-backed waterproofs for the price of a takeaway. Dunnes, Penneys, the odd pharmacy. We are not going to invent SKUs, tog ratings, or a fake “we tested the St. Bernard 90×190.” The comparison is architecture and depth, not a barcode.

Pay Emma when the mattress is tall, the topper is in play, and a shallow high-street pocket will ping off the corners. That is the 27 cm Elite / Pro problem Emma’s own sheet FAQ already admits — they just will not sell you the sheet. A Dunnes cover that fitted a 20 cm foam in 2018 is not a plan for a 27 cm hybrid plus six centimetres of Original Topper.
Pay Dunnes when the mattress is cheap, thin, or dying. €99 of protector on a mattress you will skip next year is a category error. High-street returns are a receipt and a queue; they are also €70 less.
No /best-mattress-protectors roundup on this site. This page is one SKU. If your question is “any waterproof will do,” the supermarket already answered it.
How We Rated It
Emma’s 100% claim plus a PU membrane we used as a household barrier — not a lab soak certificate. Lived spills stayed off the tick. We will not pretend we own a hydrostatic-head rig.
Better than old vinyl. Not a climate foam. Seán did not wake cooler. He also did not wake in a plastic bag. Mid-score on purpose.
This is the product. Stretch dark grey, fitted-sheet elastic, 10 cm minimum, 35 cm maximum. Failed the paper test for Elite + Pro Topper. Passed on mattress-only and on thinner topper stacks.
FAQ-honest, marketing-optimistic. Wash first. Residual rustle is real on night one, dull after. Not silent. Not a picnic blanket.
€99 is a lot next to Dunnes. It is a little next to an Elite. Clearance €43.45 is tempting and underspecified. Value depends entirely on the mattress you are wrapping.
Five Testers, One Hygiene Layer
Nobody “sleeps on” a protector the way they sleep on a pillow. We put it on beds we already know, washed it as specified, and paid attention to rustle, heat, and whether the skirt stayed put. Construction millimetres stay unpublished.

The Case Against the Waterproof Protector
We give it 4.2/5. The missing tenths are price versus Dunnes, the 14-night cliff, the guarantee that is not there, and the 35 cm ceiling Emma’s own tallest stack can trip over.
1. €99 is a lot of money for a washable sheet-shaped membrane
On an Elite, it is cheap insurance. On a shallow mattress, it is a logo. The clearance tile at €43.45 shows you what Emma will take for leftover protector stock. The Waterproof spec may be worth the extra. It is not automatically worth it because the mattress box was orange.
2. Fourteen nights, zero extra, zero guarantee
Mattresses: 200 nights, 10 years. Toppers: 100 nights, 10 years. This: 14 and none. Clause 19.1 names the Emma Mattress Protector. The PDP “Quality Guarantee” badge is decoration. If the membrane delaminates in month eight, you are in statutory-rights territory, not Emma-goodwill territory.
3. It will not cool you, and it may not fit the tallest Emma stack
Oisín’s point. Hygiene is not ThermoSync. 27 cm + ~9 cm Pro Topper is 36 cm on published figures. Emma still says “room for a topper” on mattress FAQs. Measure before you pay for a skirt that cannot legally close.
