These scores are the mattresses we actually reviewed. Both shops have moved listings.
Emma now also sells newer Original and Pro pages under the same names, mainly with stronger edges and, on emma-sleep.ie, a current Original listing that talks about extra MemoryAdapt and improved edge foam. That is not the 5-layer Original we spent eight weeks on. DFI currently lists a Sanctuary 1000 (about 11 inches, 3-year warranty, no sleep trial) at the same product URL we used for the Sanctuary 1200 review. We have not rescored the 1000. Outlet / older listings are usually closer to what we slept on.
The short verdict
This is not “which brand is better.” It is which buying model you want. Emma sells a 200-night boxed hybrid you can send back. DFI sells a pocket mattress made in County Tyrone that you buy without a trial. Default overall scores are identical at 4.2. DFI’s flagship Gelflex 3000 (4.6) outscores Emma Original Pro (4.5) on the published reviews. Emma still wins if you need a long home trial or a box that fits a Dublin stairs.
Choose Emma if…
- You will only buy with a 200-night trial and free collection. That is emma-sleep.ie, not Wayfair (100 nights on the Original review).
- You are a side or combo sleeper, 60–90 kg, and want foam contouring. That is the Original (comfort 4.3).
- You sleep warm. Original cooling is 3.5 — skip it and take the Original Pro (4.8) instead of hoping Airgocell is enough.
- You need a roll-packed box and a 10-year structural warranty on the hybrid you are actually sleeping on.
Choose DFI if…
- Irish-made is the filter. Both DFI mattresses we reviewed are handmade in County Tyrone, factory to door.
- You want a traditional pocket feel, a turnable bed, and edge support. Sanctuary edge is 4.4 vs Original 3.0, support 4.5 vs 4.0, Double €329.
- You want DFI’s gel hybrid: Gelflex 3000 is 4.6 overall, 4.7 comfort, 4.6 cooling, €539 Double, 10-year review warranty.
- You have already slept on pocket sprung, you know the feel, and you will buy without a 200-night safety net.

Winner: Emma, if you need an exit. DFI, if you already know pocket sprung.
emma-sleep.ie still sells the 200-night trial we reviewed: from the delivery day, free collection, full refund. Wayfair is 100 nights on the Original review — buy direct if the trial is why you picked Emma. Both Original and Pro carry a 10-year warranty for defects and sagging beyond 2.5 cm without body weight.
DFI does not run a sleep trial — that is on dfibeds.com, not just our reviews. Sanctuary 1200 was published with a 1-year warranty; the live Sanctuary 1000 page now states 3 years. Gelflex 3000 was published with 10 years. Comfort change is not a defect on DFI’s warranty page. That is the risk you take for the Irish-made price.
Cooling
Winner among scored beds: Original Pro (4.8), then Gelflex 3000 (4.6). Do not buy Original for heat.
On the Original, Oisín noticed warmth after 3–4 hours (cooling 3.5). Airgocell is not ThermoSync. The Pro vs Original page is blunt about that upgrade.
Gelflex’s G5 Comfort Gel is the DFI cooling story — 4.6, and the review calls it an excellent match for hot sleepers. Sanctuary has no cooling score; the knitted cover is described as temperature-regulating. We are not going to invent a 4.x to fill the cell. If heat is the whole decision, start with best cooling mattress.
Edge support and the traditional feel
Winner: DFI Sanctuary (4.4 vs Original 3.0). Gelflex 4.2 vs Pro 4.0 — still DFI, by less.
The Original’s sit-edge sinkage was 4.5 inches against a 3.95-inch industry average. Sanctuary is built as a hand-tufted, edge-to-edge, turnable pocket sprung — that is why DFI pitches it for back pain. Pro is “adequate” at 4.0, still not a dressing-on-the-edge bed. If you sit on the side every morning to put on socks, that is a DFI argument, not an Emma Original argument.
Delivery and Irish-made
Boxed convenience: Emma. Actually made in Ireland: DFI.
Emma arrives as a box in 3–7 working days, doorstep, no old-mattress collection on emma-sleep.ie when we checked. DFI makes the bed in Tyrone and runs its own fleet — review copy is within 7 days; the live site says 2–10 working days depending on Eircode, with a driver call. A full uncompressed pocket mattress is a two-person job. A boxed Emma is not.
Emma’s Irish assembly line, per emma-sleep.ie, is the Original Pro Topper with Dublin foam — not the Original or Pro mattress. If “support Irish manufacturing” is the reason you opened this page, that points at DFI, not at a boxed hybrid with an Irish marketing site.
Value
Sanctuary is the cheapest scored Double. Original matches it on value score (4.6) because of the trial.
Never pay Emma RRP. Original Single sale around €391 (RRP €559 in the review; emma-sleep.ie showed €589 in September 2026). Sanctuary Double €329 vs Original sale €489–€524. Gelflex Double €539 sits in the same band as Pro on sale (€550–€750) without a trial. You are paying Emma for the option to send it back. You are paying DFI for the factory and the pocket count.
What the reviews actually said
Emma quotes are from the named 8-week diaries. DFI reviews are hands-on but do not use that diary format — we are not going to invent Aoife-on-Sanctuary lines.
Aoife — 65 kg, side, runs cold
Emma Original, if heat is not an issueOn the Original: “The foam wraps around my shoulder and hip exactly where it needs to.” Shoulder map 8.8/10. The Sanctuary review, without a named side-sleeper diary, still flags that it may be too firm for some side sleepers. DFI’s side-sleeper bed in this pair is Gelflex, not Sanctuary.
Ciarán — 85 kg, back, lumbar sensitivity
Pro or Sanctuary, not OriginalOriginal impressed for a month, then hips a fraction lower by week 6. Pro: “The best Emma mattress I’ve tested for back support.” Sanctuary is DFI’s orthopaedic pitch — support 4.5, “best mattress for a bad back” in their copy, and our review said that claim holds up for back and combination sleepers wanting medium-firm pocket support. Two different answers: Pro if you want Emma’s trial and ThermoSync; Sanctuary if you want Tyrone pocket sprung at €329.
Siobhán — 70 kg, combination, light sleeper
Emma on motionOriginal motion isolation 4.5; partner movement was “a faint ripple instead of the full earthquake,” but edge insecurity pushed them toward the middle. Sanctuary motion is 4.0 — good, not the Emma score. If partner disturbance is the constraint, the published numbers favour Emma. If rolling off the edge is the constraint, they favour Sanctuary.
Oisín — 95 kg, stomach, runs hot
Neither default bedOriginal pelvis 5.0/10; heat after 3–4 hours. Pro pelvis 6.5/10 — better, still borderline. The Original review tells 80 kg+ stomach sleepers toward something firmer. Gelflex is marketed for all sleeper types; we did not publish a named 95 kg stomach diary on it. Do not read 4.6 overall as a stomach-sleeper guarantee.

Buy Emma if the 200-night trial, the box, and a 10-year hybrid warranty are what let you click purchase. Original for 60–90 kg side/combo sleepers who do not overheat; Original Pro if you run hot or want the extra-tall springs. Buy DFI if you want a County Tyrone pocket mattress and you already know that feel: Sanctuary for traditional orthopaedic support at €329 Double, Gelflex 3000 if you want the 4.6 gel hybrid.
