Head-to-headIreland 2026 · Two Irish spring factories

DFI vs King KoilWhich Irish mattress should you buy?

Two pocket-spring factories on this island, two completely different ways to buy. DFI is County Tyrone, factory-direct, the prices on our Sanctuary and Gelflex 3000 reviews. King Koil is Kilcullen since 1982, ICA on the spinal models, and a lie-down at Caseys before you spend.

3+ years of independent testing for Irish consumersHow we testMeet the team

We have scored two DFI beds. We have not scored a King Koil.

Sanctuary 4.2/5 and Gelflex 3000 4.6/5 are the published review scores. King Koil sits on our orthopaedic, back pain, side sleeper and seniors roundups with catalog specs — not a 1–5 sleep-test overall. Until we sleep on one, there is no King Koil star on this page.

The short verdict

If someone asks "just tell me which Irish spring bed to buy," the split is not firmness — it is how you like to shop. DFI is the factory. You pick a Sanctuary or a Gelflex on dfibeds.com, they build it in Tyrone, and their own vans bring it. King Koil is the showroom brand. You lie on a Spinal Guard or a 2000-pocket Supreme, you leave with ICA-backed hardware, and you pay furniture-shop money. Same island, same pocket-spring idea, different job.

Choose DFI if…

  • You will order a traditional pocket spring unseen. Sanctuary Double is €329 on the review we published.
  • You want the higher-spec Irish hybrid. Gelflex 3000 scored 4.6 overall, 4.6 cooling, 4.7 comfort — 3000 springs and G5 gel.
  • Free own-fleet delivery matters. DFI quotes a typical 7-day make-and-deliver from County Tyrone, ROI and NI.
  • You can live without a trial. DFI says it does not operate one. The Sanctuary is turnable; the Gelflex is not.

Choose King Koil if…

  • You want to lie on it first. Caseys Cork, Limerick and Dublin, or Meubles / Michael Murphy / Dalzells.
  • ICA-endorsed spinal support is the reason you are shopping. Chiro-Span and Tri-Chiro live on the King Koil side of our orthopaedic guide.
  • You want a longer stated warranty on a named SKU. Catalog: 10 years on Spinal Guard and Support Supreme 2000; 15 years on Extended Life Plus and Intense.
  • Hotel-feel or natural fillings. Concierge's Choice and Craftsman's Choice (wool, silk, cashmere) are King Koil collections, not DFI.
Orthopaedic roundup

Health & medical disclaimer

ICA endorsement and "best for a bad back" marketing are not clinical findings. No mattress treats or cures pain. If you live with ongoing spinal, joint, or muscular pain, speak with your GP or a chartered physiotherapist before buying on the back of a comparison. See our back pain and orthopaedic guides.

Honest trade-offs

How you actually buy them

Winner: depends whether you will buy a spring bed unseen.

DFI is dfibeds.com, phone 01 513 4760 (ROI) or 028 3839 9669 (NI), humm finance, own delivery fleet. Our online stores guide puts them in the Irish-made slot. There is no 200-night parachute.

King Koil is a retailer brand. Caseys Raheen is the 42,000 sq ft lie-down; Cork city centre and Arnotts Dublin are the other Caseys doors. Meubles and Michael Murphy are the catalog CTAs for Spinal Guard Luxury and Support Supreme 2000. Dalzells of Markethill ships King Koil toward Belfast. You pay shop money for the right to bounce on it first.

Warranty and trial

Neither brand is a sleep-trial brand. King Koil's named SKUs carry the longer warranties in our catalog.

Sanctuary review: 1 year. Current Sanctuary page: 3-year manufacturer warranty, defects only, original purchaser, no trial. Gelflex review: 10 years — still the number we use for that mattress. Some current DFI pages also print generic 5-year warranty copy, so read the SKU you are adding to the cart.

King Koil catalog: 10 years on Spinal Guard and Support Supreme 2000; 15 years on Extended Life Plus and Extended Life Intense. Irish-made collection cards in our picks still list 5 years on Lifestyle / Concierge's / Craftsman's ranges — another reason not to quote one King Koil warranty as if it were the factory.

Spinal support vs value springs

King Koil wins the credential. DFI wins the published support-for-the-money.

ICA plus Chiro-Span steel bands in the lumbar zone is why King Koil is on the orthopaedic page next to The Spinery and Respa. Spinal Guard itself is open coil, not pocket — do not lump every King Koil into this comparison's pocket-spring brief. Support Supreme 2000 is the 2000-pocket, Tri-Chiro, ICA model.

DFI Sanctuary support 4.5/5 at €329 Double is the value argument. Gelflex matches that 4.5 support score with a 4.6 cooling score the Sanctuary review never published. If your back is the whole decision and you want to lie on the bed, King Koil. If your back is the decision and €329 is the budget, Sanctuary — knowing the live listing has moved to 1000 pockets.

What you are paying for

Winner: DFI on ticket price. King Koil on showroom and finish range.

A Gelflex King at €639 on our review is still hundreds below a Caseys 5ft King Koil Classic on sale at €1,099. That gap is retail, exclusives, ICA hardware, and the cost of keeping floor models in Cork, Limerick and Dublin — not proof that one coil is three times better. Craftsman's Choice (natural wool, silk, cashmere) has no DFI equivalent in the reviews we have published.

If you would rather have a trial

Stop. These two factories are the wrong aisle. Emma Original Pro vs Original is the 200-night hybrid decision. IKEA's 365-day exchange is the longest policy we cite. DFI vs King Koil is for people who already want an Irish-made spring bed.

What each factory actually sells

DFI — the two we have reviewed

  • Sanctuary — turnable, hand-tufted pocket spring. Review unit: 1200 springs, ~25 cm, Double €329. Live listing: 1000 pocket, ~11 inches, 3-year warranty.
  • Gelflex 3000 — 12-inch hybrid, 3000 springs, G5 gel, one-sided. Double €539, Zip & Link Super King €829 Super King Zip & Link. Highest DFI score we have (4.6).
  • Catalog also lists a Zip & Link pair for couples who want different firmness, and a Hush kids mattress. Those are not scored reviews.

King Koil — three collections on kingkoil.ie

  • Lifestyle Choice — firmer, spinal and Extended Life lines (Spinal Guard, Spinal Support Pocket 1200, Extended Life 1200/1400/1600).
  • Concierge's Choice — hotel-inspired quilted tops. Our Irish-made picks describe this as the hotel-luxury band.
  • Craftsman's Choice — natural fillings (wool, silk, cashmere in our picks).
  • Caseys exclusives — Classic 1800-pocket, Gel 3000 PlushTop, Natural Empress 3300, Ultimate Support, Merrion. Made in Kildare for that shop, not the same SKU as Meubles' Spinal Guard.

DFI vs King Koil — common questions

Bottom line

DFI is the Irish spring bed you order. King Koil is the Irish spring bed you lie on first. If the budget is a Double under €550 and you accept no trial, the published scores point at DFI — Sanctuary 4.2 for the traditional turnable, Gelflex 4.6 if you want gel and 3000 springs. If ICA hardware and a Caseys (or Meubles) lie-down are the point, King Koil — and we still do not have a sleep-test overall to hang a star on.
