Sleep becomes more precious — and often more difficult — as we age. Joint stiffness, arthritis pain, circulation issues, and reduced mobility all affect how we sleep and how we feel when we wake. The right mattress can make a genuine difference: easing pressure on painful joints, supporting the spine properly, and making getting in and out of bed less of a struggle. We've researched mattresses and adjustable beds available to Irish seniors, focusing on pressure relief for arthritis, appropriate firmness for older bodies, ease of movement, and practical considerations like bed height and VAT relief eligibility for those with qualifying disabilities.

What Seniors Need in a Mattress

Age brings specific sleep challenges. Here's what matters most when choosing a mattress for comfort, mobility, and independence.

Illustration of an older couple with a supportive mattress — sitting on a firm edge with feet flat, easy to stand up from
The detail that matters most after 65 — a firm edge that holds its shape makes sitting down and standing up effortless.

Pressure Relief for Joints

Arthritis, bursitis, and general joint pain require mattresses that cushion pressure points without sacrificing support. Memory foam and pocket springs excel here — cradling hips, shoulders, and lower back while maintaining spinal alignment. Look for mattresses rated highly for pressure relief, typically medium to medium-firm.

Easy Entry & Exit

Getting in and out of bed becomes more challenging with reduced mobility. Consider mattress height (ideally knee-height for easy sitting), edge support (firm edges that don't collapse when sitting), and responsiveness (mattresses that don't 'trap' you when trying to change position or rise).

Appropriate Firmness

Most seniors benefit from medium to medium-firm mattresses (5-7 on the firmness scale). This balance provides joint cushioning without excessive sinking that makes movement difficult. Heavier individuals may need firmer options; those under 70kg may prefer slightly softer.

VAT Relief Eligibility

Irish residents with qualifying disabilities may reclaim VAT on specially adapted beds and mattresses. Adjustable beds designed for disability use typically qualify. Standard mattresses generally don't qualify unless specifically adapted. Keep receipts and obtain medical documentation if needed.

Everything You Need to Know About Mattresses for Seniors

VAT Relief for Disabled Persons in Ireland

Under Irish tax law, certain aids and appliances for people with disabilities may qualify for VAT exemption (0% VAT instead of 23%). This can apply to adjustable beds and specially adapted mattresses when prescribed or needed for a disability.

How to Claim VAT Relief:

  1. 1.Obtain confirmation from a registered medical practitioner that the equipment is needed for your disability
  2. 2.Complete Revenue Form VAT 61A (available on revenue.ie or via MyAccount)
  3. 3.Submit the form with proof of purchase to claim a refund, or provide it to the supplier for zero-rated purchase

Note: Standard mattresses typically don't qualify. The relief applies to specially designed or adapted products for disability use. Adjustable beds with medical positioning features are more likely to qualify. Always consult Revenue or a tax advisor for your specific situation.

Ideal Bed Height for Seniors

The correct bed height makes getting in and out significantly easier, reducing strain on joints and lowering fall risk. Your ideal bed height allows you to sit with feet flat on the floor and knees at a 90-degree angle.

Your HeightRecommended Bed HeightNotes
Under 5'3" (160cm)46-51cm (18-20")Lower divan or platform bed
5'3" - 5'7" (160-170cm)51-56cm (20-22")Standard divan height
5'7" - 6'0" (170-183cm)56-61cm (22-24")Standard to slightly raised
Over 6'0" (183cm)61-66cm (24-26")Consider bed risers or taller base

Total bed height = Base/divan height + Mattress depth. A 25cm mattress on a 35cm divan = 60cm total height. The Emma Original Bed is a 33 cm upholstered platform (plus mattress) — a more realistic sit-to-stand than the Emma Metal Bed, which is 25 cm overall and a low stand-up. See our best beds guide for frames we have reviewed.

Benefits of Adjustable Beds for Seniors

Adjustable beds offer significant advantages for seniors with specific health conditions. The ability to customise sleeping position can address multiple issues simultaneously.

Respiratory Issues

Elevating the head opens airways, reducing snoring and sleep apnoea symptoms. Beneficial for COPD and asthma sufferers.

Circulation & Swelling

Raising legs above heart level reduces swelling in feet and ankles, improving circulation overnight.

Acid Reflux (GERD)

Head elevation prevents stomach acid from rising, significantly reducing nighttime heartburn.

Back Pain Relief

The "zero gravity" position (legs slightly elevated, back reclined) takes pressure off the spine and lumbar region.

Easier Entry & Exit

Raising the head section helps you sit up, making it easier to swing legs out of bed in the morning.

Independent Mobility

Maintains independence longer by reducing reliance on carers for repositioning during rest.

Mattress Recommendations by Condition

Arthritis & Joint Pain

Look for pressure-relieving materials like memory foam or TEMPUR that contour to your body, eliminating pressure points at hips, shoulders, and knees. Medium to medium-firm works best—too soft lacks support, too firm creates pressure.

Recommended: TEMPUR Pro Plus, Emma Original

Lower Back Pain

Proper spinal alignment is essential. Pocket spring mattresses with zoned support or orthopaedic designs maintain the natural S-curve of your spine. Firm to medium-firm typically works best.

Recommended: Respa Pocket 1400 Ortho, King Koil Extended Life Plus

Hip Pain & Bursitis

Side sleepers with hip pain need a softer surface that allows the hip to sink in slightly, preventing pressure buildup. Memory foam or hybrid mattresses with generous comfort layers work well.

Recommended: Emma Original, TEMPUR Pro Plus

Mobility Limitations

Responsive surfaces that "push back" slightly make repositioning easier than deep-sinking memory foam. Look for pocket spring hybrids with good edge support for sitting on the bed edge.

Recommended: Silentnight Mirapocket 2000, Care to Comfort Adjustable

Frequently Asked Questions

Most seniors do well with medium to medium-firm mattresses (5-7 on a 10-point scale). This range provides enough support to maintain spinal alignment while offering sufficient cushioning for pressure relief at hips and shoulders. However, individual needs vary—lighter individuals may prefer slightly softer options, while those with back pain often benefit from firmer support. If you have specific conditions like arthritis or hip pain, a medium firmness with good pressure relief (like memory foam or hybrid) is often ideal.

Sleep changes with age — but the need barely does. See how much sleep you need by age (over-65s still need 7–8 hours), and if a parent or relative is always tired, it's worth ruling out the common causes.

How We Choose Our Recommendations

Our recommendations for seniors are based on independent research, not paid placements. We prioritise comfort, accessibility, and value for older adults.

Senior-Specific Research

We research mattresses specifically suited to older adults, focusing on features like pressure relief ratings, ease of movement, bed height compatibility, and edge support strength.

Weighted Criteria

For this guide, we weight criteria differently than general reviews: pressure relief and joint support (35%), ease of entry/exit (25%), durability (20%), value and availability (20%).

User Feedback Analysis

We analyse reviews from verified purchasers aged 55+, paying particular attention to feedback about comfort for arthritis, back pain, and mobility challenges.

Regular Updates

This guide is reviewed quarterly to reflect new products, price changes, and updated VAT relief information. Last comprehensive update: January 2026.
