The Rename: Hug Became Weighted Blanket
If you bookmarked the Hug, have a box in the press that still says Hug, or followed an old URL: this is that blanket. Emma’s Irish terms, clause 35, are the receipt. Effective 1 February 2026 the Emma Hug Weighted Blanket is the Emma Weighted Blanket. Logistics copy in the same clause: some product boxes may still be labelled Hug. The old Irish path /emma-hug-weighted-blanket still resolves to this product on emma-sleep.ie. On this site it redirects here. There is not a second, heavier Hug hiding in the range.

Bottom line: the word Hug left the title. The 7 kg did not. If you already own a Hug, you already own this. Do not reorder for a new bead recipe.

I am 80 kg. That is the ceiling of Emma’s adult band, not a coincidence in the byline. Seven kilograms is 8.75% of me — inside the 8–10% sentence Emma prints next to the 55–80 kg sentence. If this blanket has a fair Irish tester, it is someone at my weight, not someone we borrowed from a duvet review and parked under 7 kg for the photos.
I used it on the sofa first. That is the honest first hour: television, not a sleep lab. Then on the bed, on its own, and one night under a light duvet because Emma’s FAQ says you can stack it any way you like. Any way you like is not the same as any way you will sleep. I run hot. 7 kg of cotton and polyester pads is a heat source. The beads are not a climate layer. There is no ThermoSync in this product. Do not shop it as one.
Two of our five testers sit outside 55–80 kg on purpose. Ciarán is 85 kg. Oisín is 95 kg. Emma would not map this SKU to them. We still put it on them so the page is not a brochure for people who already fit. Oisín’s take is the one to read if you are heavier than the band and hoping 7 kg will “still do something.” It does something. It does not do the job the percentage guide describes.

The Emma Weighted Blanket is a 7 kg grey cotton blanket with silica glass beads held in quilted 10×10 cm pockets, plus two microfibre/polyester pads and extra polyester padding. One weight on emma-sleep.ie. Emma’s fit copy: choose 8–10% of body weight; this blanket is for adults 55–80 kg. Siobhán at 70 kg is the clean match (10%). Seán at 80 kg is the top of the band. Aoife at 65 kg is inside the named band but a hair over 10%. Ciarán at 85 kg and Oisín at 95 kg are outside — we say so in the tester notes, not in a footnote.
It is not a duvet. Emma will sell it on the duvets hub, next to the Spring & Autumn Duvet and the All Seasons Duvet. Those two keep you warm. This one adds kilograms. You can use it under, over, or without a duvet — Emma says any — but July in an Irish bedroom with 7 kg of padding plus a winter tog is a different night to a February sofa.
At €111.20 (20% off €139) in the Late Summer window we checked, with a 14-night trial and free pickup, it is a fair Irish price for a single-weight cotton blanket if you are in the band and you actually want weight. Bottom line: buy this if you are an adult in the 55–80 kg band and you want 7 kg on the sofa or the bed. Skip it if you need a different weight, a duvet, a medical device, or something for a child.

7 kg: Who Emma Says It Fits — and Where the Two Rules Disagree
Emma prints two fit rules on the same FAQ. One: the blanket should be 8–10% of your body weight. Two: this blanket is suitable for adults weighing between 55 and 80 kg. Those are not the same statement. 8% of 55 kg is 4.4 kg. 10% of 80 kg is 8 kg. A single 7 kg SKU cannot sit inside 8–10% for every adult in a 25 kg band. We are not “correcting” Emma. We are putting a calculator on the copy they already published.

Under 55 kg: 7 kg is over 12%. Emma’s percentage rule would send you to a lighter blanket they do not sell in Ireland. Inside 55–80 kg: this is Emma’s customer, but 7 kg still swings from “a bit over 10%” (Aoife, 65 kg) to a clean 10% (Siobhán, 70 kg) to 8.75% (Seán, 80 kg, still hot). Over 80 kg: the named band has ended. Ciarán at 85 kg is the awkward case — 8.2% would pass the percentage sentence and fail the kilogram sentence. Oisín at 95 kg is not awkward. 7.4% is a heavy throw. If you want 8–10% at 95 kg you are shopping 7.6–9.5 kg, which Emma does not sell here.
Not for babies or small children. Emma’s FAQ: “We wouldn’t recommend using our weighted blanket for babies or small children as it might be too heavy for them.” That is the whole policy. 7 kg on a small body is not a parenting hack. It is a safety no.
Beads, Pads, 10×10 cm Pockets
Emma’s Irish layer diagram is four panels, not a mystery foam stack. Cotton on the outside. Quilted pockets. Two microfibre/polyester pads plus extra polyester. Silica glass beads under 1 mm. Millimetre thicknesses of the pads are unpublished. We are not inventing them with a kitchen scale and a seam ripper. What you can verify without destroying the blanket is the grid, the rattle (or lack of one), and the fact that 7 kg is 7 kg.
Breathable cotton shell
Emma: “100% breathable cotton”The grey face you see. Emma sells it as all-season cotton that helps you stay cool. Cotton is not a cooling foam. It is a fabric that breathes better than a sealed polyester throw. Hot sleepers will still feel 7 kg of padding.

Weighted blankets fail when fill walks to one corner. 10×10 cm quilting is Emma’s answer; ours did not avalanche on the sofa. Silica glass beads under 1 mm are sold as quiet — you should not hear gravel when you turn. They are not a therapy cartridge. The extra polyester padding is why this sleeps warmer than a thin 7 kg sheet: two pads plus fill plus cotton is a quilt. Colour is grey. Sofa or bed. It will not clip to a mattress. If you wanted drape, you wanted the Spring & Autumn Duvet.
Not a Medical Device — Read Emma’s Own Footnote
The Irish product page is heavier on sleep-and-anxiety language than we are willing to repeat as fact. Emma cites public studies. Emma also prints, in its own references block, that existing data on the benefits of weighted blankets in healthy adults is limited. We are keeping that sentence and leaving the rest of the citation list on emma-sleep.ie. This review is a buyer’s guide to a 7 kg blanket, not a journal club.
What Emma will say
Deep pressure stimulation. Calm. Hug. Studies on insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, autism, inpatient mental health, COVID-era sleep disruption — listed as reading, with a Guardian “Best Weighted Blanket 2026” line on the hero. That Guardian line is Emma’s marketing citation. We did not award it. We are not going to launder it into our headline.

How to Wash a Blanket That May Beat the Machine
Emma publishes two wash stories, and they are both useful. The product-page FAQ is the blunt one: the blanket is designed to be machine washable, but its weight exceeds the household washing-machine limit; use a blanket cover, or hand-wash if your machine has a weight limit. The duvets-hub FAQ is the temperature one: blanket at 30°C, spread out to air dry; removable cover at 40°C. Read both. Do not pick the sentence that lets you stuff 7 kg of wet cotton into a 7 kg drum.

A typical Irish 7–8 kg machine is already at its nameplate with this blanket dry. Add water and you are in the territory Emma is warning about. Emma recommends washing the cover. Air dry means spread the blanket out — a 7 kg wet quilt on one peg stretches seams. The Spring & Autumn and All Seasons duvets are the 60°C products. This is not them.
This Is Not a Duvet — Even Though Emma Sells It on /duvets/
Navigation on emma-sleep.ie puts the Weighted Blanket in the duvets family. That is a menu. It is not a tog rating. A duvet’s job is thermal. This blanket’s job is mass. You can sleep under it without another duvet — Emma says so — but you are then using 7 kg of quilted cotton as your only cover, with no published tog and no published centimetres on the current Irish PDP. If coverage of a King mattress is the question, Emma has not answered it on that page.

Emma’s FAQ: under the duvet, on top, or instead — no defined way. Flexibility is real; overheating is too. A light Spring & Autumn Duvet (formerly Cloud, from €71.40 in the same sale) is the warmth layer if you still want a duvet in the stack. The All Seasons Duvet is the split-layer one, from €219.
Older Hug listings, some bundle pages, and UK pages have used 150×200 cm. The live Irish PDP we loaded did not print centimetres. We will not launder a UK figure into an Irish spec. 7 kg is what Ireland currently publishes. 7 kg is not a length.

How We Rated It
In the 55–80 kg band, 7 kg is a distinct, even load — the 10×10 cm grid does the unglamorous job. It is a quilted weight, not a hotel cloud.
Cotton plus two pads plus extra polyester is warm. Seán (hot sleeper, 80 kg) felt it. This is not a cooling product. Score reflects physics, not a failed climate layer Emma never claimed in foam terms.
Excellent if you are ~70 kg. Honest at 80 kg. Awkward at 65 kg on the percentage rule. Wrong tool at 95 kg. One SKU cannot be five sizes.
Beads stayed put. No rattle. Grey cotton is a sofa fabric, not a performance knit. Construction matches the diagram.
€111.20 (was €139) with 14 nights is a fair Irish accessory price if you fit. Full €139 with no guarantee is a harder sell. Check the till before 30 August if you want the 20%.
Five Body Weights, Five Takes
Scores below are from sofa evenings and bed nights, not from a pressure mat. Two testers are outside Emma’s 55–80 kg band on purpose. We quote that in the byline of their cards so you cannot miss it.

The Case Against: Too Hot, Too Heavy, One Weight Only
We give it 4.1/5. We do not give it 5/5. The missing tenths are not a secret defect in the beads. They are three constraints Emma already published, if you read past the hug copy.
1. It will sleep warmer than the cotton line suggests
Breathable cotton is the shell. Two microfibre/polyester pads plus extra polyester are the inside. 7 kg of that on a torso is insulation. Seán runs hot; he felt it. Emma’s “helps you to stay cool” is a fabric claim, not a climate-foam claim. If you already kick the duvet off in an Irish summer, adding this on top is a bad experiment. Use the 14 nights in the season you actually sleep, not a showroom afternoon.
2. Too heavy — or not heavy enough — and you cannot change it
One SKU. 7 kg. If you are under 55 kg, Emma’s percentage rule says this is too much. If you are over 80 kg, Emma’s named band says you are not the customer; Oisín at 95 kg confirmed it feels like a throw. There is no zipper that dumps a kilogram. There is no Irish 5 kg or 9 kg sibling. Returning it because you are the wrong mass is using the trial as designed. Buying a second one will not fix it. There is still only 7 kg.
3. One weight only — and a short trial with no guarantee
Pillows get 30 nights and two years. Mattresses get 200 nights and ten years. This gets 14 nights and clause 19.1: excluded from any guarantee. The T&Cs trial table even disagrees with itself on the voluntary-extension column. The live PDP is 14 nights. Fourteen nights is enough to know if 7 kg is intolerable. It is not enough to know if a seam lasts three winters. Buy it as a comfort accessory. Do not buy it as a warranted mattress-adjacent investment.
When to walk away: you are outside 55–80 kg; you sleep hot and already hate extra fabric; you wanted a duvet; you wanted a medical device; you wanted something for a child; or you wanted centimetres printed on the Irish page and a 10-year badge that survives clause 19. The 14-night trial covers a weight experiment. It does not cover a diagnosis.
