Outlast vs ThermoSync: Two Cooling Stories
Comfort Cooling is a microfibre pillow with an Outlast layer in the cover stack. Outlast is a licensed phase-change material — it absorbs, stores and releases heat so the surface does not spike. That is not the same as Emma’s graphite ThermoSync foam (the Adapt Cooling pillow, the Original Pro mattress, the Original Pro Topper). You feel Outlast at the first touch; ThermoSync is a slower climate layer inside foam. Different tools.
Outlast® (this pillow)
Phase-change. Instant cool-to-the-touch on the cheek, then it buffers heat rather than dumping it into a foam slab. Aoife (who sleeps cold) found the first touch almost too crisp. Oisín liked it more than people who only talk about ThermoSync admit.

ThermoSync (Adapt Cooling)
Graphite foam. A thinner slice of the same idea Emma puts in mattresses. It will not freeze your face. Hot foam sleepers notice it across the night because they are lying on foam that is trying not to be a radiator.
Wins if you want foam climate, not squash.
We are not citing “48% less sweating” as this SKU’s lab result. That number lives in Outlast’s apparel and helmet testing, not on emma-sleep.ie’s Comfort Cooling page, and not in our Drumcondra spare room. Pasting a clothing-lab percentage onto a 50×70 pillow would be dishonest. What we did: five testers slept on Comfort Cooling with layers in and out, and we compared the Outlast first-touch to ThermoSync on Adapt Cooling in the same week so the cooling claims were not mixed up.
Hot sleeper who still wants foam: Adapt Cooling, on sale. Soft-pillow sleeper who wants a cool cheek: this. Do not buy Comfort Cooling “just to try cooling” at €159 — that is what the cheaper ThermoSync pillow is for.

This is the pillow I would steal from a hotel. It is also the pillow I would not pay €159 for if Emma is giving it away with a topper. Know which deal you are in. Cool cheek, soft fill. I would keep this for guests. For me, night after night, I still prefer a bit more foam under the neck — Adapt Cooling, two layers.
Siobhán called it perfect. Dara called it too squashy. That is a Comfort Cooling sentence, and it is the whole product: hotel loft for people who hate a foam face. Oisín on his stomach (one inner layer) said it was the only Emma pillow that did not feel like a foam wedge. Aoife on her side wanted more structure than Aerosoft gives even at full loft — she stayed happier on Adapt Cooling, and she would not spend €159 on this for herself.
Emma publishes 4.5 from 617 reviews on the Irish page; that is the brand’s score, and it matches a pillow people like for softness, not for orthopaedic firmness. Our 4.3 is the same story with a harsher value line. Standalone, you are paying full luxury-pillow money. In the Pro topper basket, you are not.

Bundle: Emma is giving this exact pillow away with the Original Pro Topper. If you already want the 9 cm topper, do not also add Comfort Cooling to the cart. If you only want the pillow, you are paying full luxury-pillow money for Outlast and a hotel feel.
Bottom line: the soft cooling pillow. Steal it with the Pro topper. Pay €159 only if you know you want squash, not foam.

List price on emma-sleep.ie: €159 for a single 50×70. No 40% tag on the page we checked in August 2026 — Comfort Cooling was the pillow not in the Late Summer percentage-off pile. That list is also the number Emma prints next to the free gift on the Original Pro Topper. Treat “worth up to €159” as a list figure, not street value: this pillow is often sold cheaper than list on other Emma markets and in older promotions. Confirm the live Irish till.
Emma T&Cs 19.12: if the order includes a free product, all items must be returned together. The free-gift version follows the topper order — if you return the topper, expect the gift to go back too. Confirm with Emma support if you only want to keep one item. Do not plan to keep the pillow and send the topper home.
There is no Comfort Cooling 2-pack on emma-sleep.ie. Hybrid and Adapt Cooling both have pair SKUs in the current Irish range. Couples who want two hotel pillows buy two singles, wait for a promotion, or take the one free unit with the Pro topper and buy a second later.
If the gift-with-purchase disappears, this becomes a full-price luxury pillow again. Check the till. If you are unsure about €159, wait until you are buying the Original Pro Topper or until Emma discounts this SKU.

This will never be Adapt-like support. Microfibre will never have foam’s slow-recovery hug. That is the point — but do not expect a cervical brick. Aoife still wanted foam for side-sleeper height. Strip a layer for stomach sleeping; leave them in for back and side, per Emma.
How We Scored It
Five testers slept on Comfort Cooling with layers in and out. We compared the Outlast first-touch to ThermoSync on Adapt Cooling in the same week. Emma’s 4.5 from 617 reviews is reported as the brand’s published score, not ours.
The softest pillow in Emma’s Irish range. Stomach sleepers and people who hate foam faces will like this immediately.
Adjustable, but it will never be a firm foam stack. Side sleepers who need a high, solid loft should look at Adapt Cooling instead.

€159 is a lot for one 50×70 pillow. Spread across Emma’s 2-year pillow guarantee it is still the dearest single in the Irish range. The honest comparison is not “is a pillow allowed to cost this” — it is whether you are paying list or taking the gift.

Do not pay luxury price “just to try cooling” — Adapt Cooling is on sale and uses ThermoSync. Comfort Cooling is the hotel-feel halo product. Pay it only if you want this feel.
The Case Against Comfort Cooling
We give it 4.3/5. Comfort is 4.7. Value is 3.6. That spread is the review. Here are the strongest arguments for buying something else — or waiting for the gift.
1. €159 is a lot for one 50×70 pillow
No sale on the live Irish page we checked. Hybrid and Adapt Cooling are deep in the sale. You are paying halo-product money. If Emma is giving this away with a topper, paying list is the expensive way to get the same SKU.
2. Weak as a high, firm side-sleeper loft
Aoife still wanted foam. This is plush, not a cervical brick. Adjustable inner layers help stomach sleepers more than they help a 65 kg side sleeper who needs height. Ciarán called it a bit floaty — comfortable, not “supportive in the desk-job sense.”
3. No two-pack, and microfibre is not foam
Couples buy two singles or wait for a promotion. We did not find a Comfort Cooling bundle. And if you wanted Adapt’s slow-recovery hug, you will not find it here. That is the point of the product — it is also a reason to leave the page.
When to walk away: if budget is the constraint, if you need a high firm loft, if you are a foam devotee, or if you wanted a pair in one SKU. Steal it with the Pro topper. Otherwise wait for a discount — or buy Adapt Cooling / Hybrid on sale and keep the hotel pillow for the guest room you do not have to pay €159 to kit.
